SMS charges for Instant Messaging on the Dash
The Dash application called "Instant Messaging" on its opening screen that gives you 3 choices for instance messages-- AOL, ICQ, and Yahoo does not use a data connection. This feature uses SMS and will charge an SMS fee for each IM. If the user wishes to avoid this charge they should, Use the pocket MSN application and log into MSN messenger; this uses data so they can use WiFi. They can also buy a third party application that supports using MSN, Yahoo, ICQ, AOL, and Google Talk with a data connection. I could not find any free applications that support anything other then MSN. On T-mo site they do have a notice that additional fees may apply for this service.

I like the fact that the instant messaging only uses the text messaging charges because I would rather not pay the huge bill of having the data plan.
This phone was a savior because it had WiFi which eliminated my need for a data plan. I know, it'd be nice to use the internet or check your emails when a WiFi connection is unavailable, but with all the WiFi connections available (especially in a metropolitan area like LA or SF), there's no need to pay for a data plan. I'm fine with my voice plan with the added unlimited text messaging; the best deal ever. |

For T-mobile, I purchased unlimited text messaging, this keeps me from having to run up a bill using the SMS IM service, Since I text allot already, it seems to be fine, I have used this from my crappy first nokia all the way up to my RAZR, Blackberry and now the Dash. Personally the Blackberry is a waste because you need a data plan to even use the IM services, so I tend to like the dash better...
I'll be pissed if I have some bogus charge for the Instant messaging when I have unlimited texts and such.
1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?
