T-Mobile Dash (HTC S620) FAQ (Version 3.16)

Last Updated: June 17, 2008

Thank you to everyone at HowardForums.com, this thread at Qusers.com, XDA-Developers and a T-Mobile employee with too much time on his hands for all the tips and tweaks listed here! In one week, we cracked the essential elements of the Dash.

IMPORTANT! Editing your Windows Registry will void your warranty and can render your device unstable which may require you to hard reset it. Always back up your registry and PIM information.

Disclaimer: HTCWiki and it's users have no responsibly for any damages or inconveniences that may arise following the articles below and is provided for informational purposes only. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

The first thing you can try is to use an application-unlock program for your phone in order to be able to change certain parts of the registry and install and run certain programs. Unlocking applications can be found in the "Applications" section below.

FYI:
  • The Dash has no Infra-red and no Dial-Up Networking Bluetooth profile.
    • While there is no specific DUN Bluetooth, it does support Personal Area Networks to allow your Dash to act as a modem. This works great, and on T-Mobile I get about 96kbps. Please see the DASH AS A MODEM section to learn how you, too, can get internet on your computer.
  • The Camera Shutter Sound can be turned off directly in the Camera Applcation (Left softkey -> Press Down -> Press Left (should be on the "Advanced" page) -> Scroll down to "Shutter Sound" and set to off).
  • To delete the contents of any field in any app on the Dash, press the <- key next to the Red Button and below the right Soft key.
  • If you care/want, here is the HTC T-Mobile Dash manual
  • Extra Memory: the Dash uses microSD cards and accepts modules of up to 2GB. microSD is a newer name for the same standard that was earlier called T-Flash and Transflash. Simply putting a couple of applications (the "Application Unlock" piece of software, and a usable file transfer networking application, both linked to below) on a memory card is one way to start getting applications on the phone. Check www.dealstobuy.com , www.techbargains.com , www.buy.com, www.dealwatcher.biz (thank you hoopsbwc34 for the link), ebay.com....etc for deals.
    • (12/29/06) $69 (with shipping) 2gb microSD card
    • (7/9/07) 2gb cards are now around $20 from many sites including newegg.com

What if something goes wrong, can I reset the Dash to its out-of-the box state (Hard Reset)?
NOTE: Always back up your personal information (Contacts, Notes, etc). Files/Contacts stored on the SIM card and Micro SD card will not be erased.

  • Yes: you have 2 options...
OPTION 1
  • Press Start -> Accessories -> Clear Storage, press enter to launch, you will be prompted to type "1234" and to press Enter. If you do this you will lose all contents and the Dash will be restored to its original configuration. It takes about 5 minutes for it do this and reboot.
  • If you are locked up and can't get to the Clear Storage utility, turn the phone off; hold down the two softkey menu select buttons (above the home and <- buttons); press power on while still holding the buttons down and follow the prompts on the screen. Timing is critical on the latter option, so if you miss it once, try again.

OPTION 2
(THIS IS WHAT T-MOB TECH SUPPORT WILL ADVISE YOU TO DO)
MASTER RESET PROCEDURES UPPDATED ON 7/23/07
I had to follow the correct steps twice before the reset took effect so don't give up after the first try. Start with Dash powered off.

1. PRESS AND HOLD BOTH SOFT KEYS.
2. WHILE HOLDING DOWN SOFT KEYS, PRESS AND RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON, WAIT 3-5 SEC. (PHONE SHOULD POWER ITSELF ON BY DOING THIS)
3. RELEASE THE TWO KEYS SOFT KEYS.
4. WHEN SCREEN ON DASH LOOKS LIKE IT'S IN DOS FORMAT, PRESS SEND (GREEN ANSWER KEY)

GOOD LUCK!

Application-Unlock
See important note at top of page about editing Windows Registry.
  1. Download the cab file and run it.
  2. Soft reset (restart the phone).
  3. You should now be able to edit the registry without restrictions and install and run any applications.

Programming FAQ
  1. What do I need to get started programming for WM5 Smartphone?
    • A good start would be to get a LICENSED copy of Visual Studio 2005. It MUST licensed to develop mobile applications. The Express Editions will not work. (*cough* torrents *cough*)
    • Once you have VS2005, download the WM5 Smartphone SDK from Microsoft, the Motorola Q plugin from developer.motorola.com and install them.
  2. How do I use the Moto Q skin with the landscape image file?
    • Open VS2005, Tools -> Options -> Device Tools -> Devices. Select Moto Q as the default.
    • Create a new solution and select Mobile Devices -> Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone. Once inside the solution, check in the top left corner in the toolbar and make sure Moto Q is selected.
  3. What language should I program in?
    • This is totally up to you. I see C# to be the easiest, but VB.NET works too. I would not recommend C++ to a beginner. It is extremely difficult to develop mobile applications with it. However, they all do work as long as the phone has .NET 2.0 CF installed.
  4. I am getting some weird error when I try to run my program!
    • There can be many reasons why it isn't working, but if you can run the program in the emulator, but not your phone, make sure .NET 2.0 CF is installed on your phone. If it is and you still get the error, reinstall it.

Repair & Disassemble
  • Dropped your Dash? The phone still works but theLCD screen is messed up? worry no more, view this or this video on youtube to learn how to disassemble your dash for repair and replacement of parts, especially broken LCD screens.

Ringtones and Alarms
  • Add .mp3, .wav, .mid files to \Application Data\Sounds\
They will then show up in Start -> Settings -> Sounds for you to use as a ring tone or other notification.
  • T-Will came up with an excellent idea for the ones who need a "spoken/voice" ring tone
Visit http://www.research.att.com/~ttsweb/tts/demo.php AT&T Natural Voice Technolgy, type the text, listen to it and download when satisfied, download in .wav format to your computer for you to copy to the Dash (via ActiveSync, Bluetooth, or other) and save in \Application Data\Sounds\
This way could create a personalized alert for incoming calls, new e-mails, text messages, etc...
  • More free ring tones http://www.modaco.com/index.php?showtopic=66965 here (the MP3 Music type). Thank you Simon the author of that thread for doing all that work.

Change Sound Profiles Easily
  • Press and hold the # key.

Phantom Alarm Bug
  • There is a http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=1032290 reported issue of multiple alarms going off even though the alarm is turned off in Settings. There is no known permanent fix at this point.
  • Phantom alarms can be cleaned up by following these instructions:
  1. Load http://s-k-tools.com/index.html?sktools/m_feat.html#lite SKTools Smartphone Edition (Clean up and uninstaller utility)
  2. Select View -> Maintenance -> Notifications Queue
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the list and you should see multiple entries already checked for “Clock.exe” (these are the "phantom alarms" in the notification queue).
  4. Select Action -> Delete marked
  5. Do a soft reset (turn off then back on).

T-Mobile Branding Hardware and Software Modifications - Remove the logo/branding from the Dash facade (if you really cannot stand it).
Warning! De-branding WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. These methods may discolor the area where the logo has been removed from and leaves scratches. Use at your own risk!
How to remove the T-Mobile Start-up and Shut-off animations/images/Sounds.
  • With http://mobile.surrealnetworks.com/DashApps.htm Total Commander installed, navigate to
    • HKLM>software>HTC>where you found a startup and shutdown key, edit and empty each
    • then go to
    • HKLM\System\Shutdown\2 and changing "Splash" value to "None." Same in HKLM\System\Startup\2, as well as changing the "Duration" value in there to "0."
    • Reboot. You should notice a quicker shut down and only have a 2-3 seconds static T-Mobile image before the Green MS Push screen, then straight on to the Home Screen.

How to change the T-Mobile Start-up and Shut-off animations/images/Sounds.
You can change the startup and shutdown screens on your Dash. You can also change the "T-Mobile" logo when you are looking through your call history.
  • Startup/Shutdown
    • Navigate to \Windows\ and copy "TMO startup.gif" and "TMO shutdown.gif" somewhere to your PC for backup purposes.
    • At this point, you can replace those two files with images of your choice as long as they are the exact same filename and 320x240
      • If you don't want to use GIF files (e.g. you want to use JPG, PNG etc) you'll have to go edit the registry. Change the respective values in HKLM\System\Startup and HKLM\System\Shutdown to the paths of the files you want to use

  • T-Mobile logo in call history
    • Navigate to \Windows\ and copy "BrandingBox.gif" to your PC for backup
    • Replace this file with the GIF image of your choice. The image must be 320x27

Home Screens - Home screens designed for the Q work on the Dash!

Internet and Networking Tweaks
Unlimited Internet With the $19.99 T-Mobile Total Internet Add-on
  1. Login to my.t-mobile.com.
  2. Go to "Plans and Services" and sign up for the Total Internet Add-on service.
  3. That's it! You should now have access to unlimited internet (INCLUDING the HotSpots!).

NOTE: THE 5.99 T-MOBILE WEB SERVICE WILL WORK FOR REGULAR INTERNET ACCESS:
The 5.99 service was intended for POP/Exchange/IMAP email forwarding and Basic WAP browsing only. However a proxy setting allows for full HTTP and HTTPS access. This method is not recommended as it is an unsanctioned workaround.
The $19.99 Total internet addon is recommended for internet access and it is a full service (SOCKET & HTTP access plus unlimited Hot Spot Wi-Fi access). The information below may work for some people and may not work for other. Tweak at your own risk.

Option:
Windows Mobile 5
Windows Mobile 6
Unlimited internet with the $5.99 T-MobileWeb service:

The $19.99/month T-Mobile Total Internet package is not required to have unlimited internet access on the Dash, instead the $5.99 T-MobileWeb (t-zones) service is all you need. Note the following limitations to the T-MobileWeb internet service:

a: The internet applications on your device will need to have an option to specify a connection to a proxy server, if it doesn't have this option then the application most likely will not be able to access the internet.

b: The following applications will not work over T-MobileWeb: MSN Messenger, Agile Messenger (without the proxy option), some streaming media, Hotmail, Pocket MSN, Windows Live Applications, and Java applications.

To setup the internet connection over T-MobileWeb (t-zones) follow these instructions

  • Add the $5.99 T-MobileWeb service to your current voice plan (it may take up to 72 hours to activate, but typically takes less than 24 hours).
  • Follow the righ instructions to setup the Dash (or any Windows Mobile Smartphone). Choose the instructions for either Windows Mobile 5 or Windows Mobile 6:
  1. Add the T-MobileWeb (T-Zones) Proxy Connection
    Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections -> Proxy -> Menu -> Add
    Description: T-Zones Proxy
    Connects from: WAP Network
    Connects to: The Internet
    Proxy (name : port): 216.155.165.50:8080
    Type: HTTP
    User name: <blank>
    Password: <blank>
    Press Done.

  2. Configure the Existing Data Connection
    Start Menu -> Settings -> Connections -> GPRS -> T-Mobile Data -> Menu -> Edit
    Connects to: WAP Network
    Access point: wap.voicestream.com
    User name: <blank>
    Password: <blank>
    Primary DNS: 0.0.0.0
    Secondary DNS: 0.0.0.0
    IP address: <blank>
    Press Done.

  3. Configure Pocket Internet Explorer
Start Menu -> Internet Explorer -> Menu -> Tools -> Options -> Connections
    Uncheck "Automatically detect settings".
Select Network: The Internet (Must be set to "The Internet" to work over WiFi. Try "WAP Network" if you're having trouble over the
    EDGE/GPRS connection)
    Press Done.

  4. Configure Messaging (follow these steps for POP or IMAP email accounts that have been manually setup)
Start Menu -> Messaging -> Highlight your email account -> Menu -> Settings -> Press Next twice
    Select Network: WAP Network
Press Next three times then Finish.
1. In Settings/Connections/GPRS/T-Mobile Data:
Tmobile Data
Connects to: WAP Network
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com

2. Add a 2nd and 3rd GPRS options:
T-Mobile MMS
Connects to: WORK
Access Point: wap.voicestream.com

3. Then create ONE Proxy:
Settings/Connections/Proxy

Name:Tzones Proxy
Connects from: WAP Network
Connects to: The Internet
Proxy: 216.155.165.50:8080
Type: HTTP

4. In connections, click menu, then advance and set ALL connections to AUTOMATIC

5. To get the Exchange Server working:
(
Exchange Server settings)
Options/Advanced
Connection: Internet

6. To get Pop mail accounts working:
(This will need to be done for each account you have)
Options/Account settings/Advanced Server Settings
Network Connection: Work
NOTE! The option to select which way to connect isn't available until you finish creating the POP account (go back in and change to: Work)

7. To get IE working:
(In Pocket Internet Explorer) Menu/Tools/Options/Connections
Check "Automatically Detect Settings"
Select Network: WAP Network

That should do it! Not all applications will work with this configuration, but Messaging (Exchange/POP3/IMAP) and Pocket Internet Explorer will work. Credits for the WM6 instructions to go http://dashapps.googlepages.com/ ! If the above instructions don't work, try completely deleting the connections and re-adding them.

How to Change the Pocket Internet Explorer Home Page when using WM6
1. With a registry editor navigate to "HKLM\software\microsoft\Internet Explorer\About URLS"
2. Change key "home_0409" to the URL you want to use. For example: http://www.google.com
3. From now on, when you open PIE, it will automatically go to the URL you have set.

JOGGR and Keyboard
  • Enable the JOGGR: This will disable it as a volume control, and enable it as the default JOGGR functions (back, scroll, email).
  • - or -
    • Edit: HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\SwitchToAudioFunc to 0
    • Remap the JOGGR Keys
    • Bottom JOGGR "Button"
    • HKCU\ControlPanel\JogBar\Settings\BottomKeyApplicationName (replace with app of your choice)
    • and
    • HK_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\JobBar\Settings\BottomKeyAppParameter (leave empty)
    • Top JOGGR "Button"
    • HK_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\JobBar\Settings\TopKeyApplicationName (ditto)
    • and
    • HK_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\JobBar\Settings\TopKeyAppParameter (ditto)

Remapping Keys (Two method)
  • ***First Method - How To Edit the Keyboard Link
  1. Download http://vieka.com/wordpad.htm Vieka WordPad.
  2. Sync your phone to your PC.
  3. Run CE Notepad on your computer and open any of the following files:
    T-Zones Button: "\Windows\Short_IE.lnk"
  • ***Second Method if you have Total Commander - this can be done on the Dash directly.
  • Navigate to \Windows\Short_IE.lnk
  • Edit it (to one of the suggestions below for instance), save and reboot.
  • Recommended Remaps
  • CommManager: 36#"\windows\CommManager.exe"
  • Task Manager: 19#\Windows\IA_Task_Manager.exe?:TaskManagerApp
  • Internet Explorer: 36#"\windows\iexplore.exe"
Switch Text Input Mode (XT9 English, ABC)
  • The Dash defaults to the XT9 input method, in order to change the input method for an application follow these instructions. Note, after a restart the Dash will default back to XT9, and at this time there is no known setting to make ABC the default text input method.
  • Press Alt+Space in each app.
  • This key sequence doesn't seem to stick throughout the system so it needs to be done for each application separatley.
  • Input the Alternate Symbol/Letter Easily
  • Press and hold any key to input its alternate symbol/letter.
  • For Example:
If you want the !, press and hold the M key until it shows up.
If you want the ?, press and hold the H key until it shows up.
and so on...this works with any of the keys.
  • NOTE: This only works on the T-Mo Branded Dash! Does not work on the HTC S620

FYI: Keyboard Mappings in Pocket Internet Explorer
  • 2 (E) = Up
    8 (C) = Down
to scroll up or down quickly while browsing.

Speed Dial attributes work for Contacts and Programs
  • Highlight a contact, press right softkey (Menu) and choose Add Speed dial. You can then chose a non-already-used number between 0 and 99.
  • Same method for programs! Go to Start -> Highlight an app and press menu -> As Above.

Phone Calls and SMS
  • Change the Dial and In-Call Screen Background
  1. Copy \Windows\BackgroundImage_Land.bmp and \Windows\_BackgroundImage_Land.bmp to your PC or a backup folder in case you want to restore these in the future.
  2. Make images with dimensions of 320 x 186 with the same names as the files above above.
  3. Copy the new images back to the \Windows\ folder and overwrite the old files.
  • Shut Off or change volume of the Beep that Occurs When a Call Is Initiated
WM5:
  1. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\InCall2
  2. Change String/Value InitVol to 0 to silence, to any other value to change its volume.
WM6:
  1. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\CallStart
  2. Change String/Value InitVol to 0
  • Quick Speakerphone During Call
    • Hold the green call button
  • Initiate Voice-tag (voice-dialing) : Hold the home button.
  • Call Waiting Alert Volume (when already in a call)
    • You can adjust this in Start -> Settings -> Accessibility
  • How to Delete all SMS (text messages)
    • There is a sort of easy way to delete all texts. Go to the text message account and then hit menu and go to Folders, then in that screen hit menu again and go to Manage Folders. Now you can select the folder hit menu and clear test messages should be an option. Took me a little while to find this one out.
  • Disable the "Message Sent" notification after sending a text message by following these steps:
1. Navigate to: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Inbox
2. Create a new key "Settings"
3. Create a new string value "SMSNoSentMsg" and set the value to 1
  • Create contact groups for text messaging
    • WM5/6 Are both lacking the ability to create custom groups for text messaging, rather than selecting each contact individual. However, there is a simple way to get around this.
      1. Create a new contact and name it based on who will be in the group
      2. Add a phone number into the mobile number field followed by a ">" and a semi-colon ";"
      3. follow that with up to 20 phone numbers each seperated by a semi-colon
      4. should look like: 5555555555>;5555555555;5555555555; etc
      5. Text everyone in your phone at once!

Smartphone FAQ's
  • Does the Dash have Word/Excel?
Windows Mobile 5 Smartphone Edition does not include the Office Apps. However, it is capable of viewing Office formatted files thanks to a few apps which come with the device (found in Start -> Applications).
Windows Mobile 6 Smartphone Edition does include Word, Excel, and Powerpoint Mobile.
  • Does the Dash (Smartphone) have a notes application?
No, Microsoft includes a mobile version of OneNote2007 (part of MS Office 2007) that can be installed at the same time you install it on your PC. If you already have installed OneNote2007, you can install it by going to Tools>Options>OneNote Mobile
There also are third-party notes application such as http://www.syncdata.it/ Smartphone Notes or http://www.phatware.com/phatnotes/phatnotesphone.html
Phatnotes Smartphone Edition must be used. Both of these also support syncing with Outlook Notes.
  • I'm trying to delete/move a shortcut from the Start Menu, but after I soft reset my phone the shortcut is back! The shortcut keeps reappearing because it exists in ROM, therefore, it can't be permanently deleted. Follow these instructions to keep it from showing on the Start Menu:
  1. Use a third-party file manager such as http://resco.net/smartphone/explorer/ Resco Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the \Windows\Start Menu\ folder.
  3. Select the shortcut and open the Properties screen for that shortcut.
  4. Check the "Hidden" check box.
  5. Soft reboot your phone.
  6. The shortcut should now be gone from the Start Menu.

System Tweaks
  • FYI: Overview of the Dash/Windows Mobile 5.0 Memory Management here.
  • After performing these registry hacks or mods, you will need to restart your device for them to take effect.
Please understand that modifying the registry can result in complete damage to your phone, do not modify the registry if you are not comfortable doing so. These hacks are just that, hacks, they are not guaranteed to produce the same results on all phones. Modify your registry at your own risk. We do not take any responsibility for these hacks.
  • Change Start Menu to List View Instead of Large Icon View
  1. Navigate to \HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shell\StartMenu
  2. 2a: Change the GridView value to 0 if you want list view.
2b: Change the GridView value to 1 if you want grid (large icon) view.
  • Remove "Set Up My E-mail" Shortcut (or any shortcut in ROM) From the Start Menu
These instructions will hide any shortcut that's in ROM.
  1. Use a third-party file manager such as http://resco.net/smartphone/explorer/ Resco Explorer.
  2. Navigate to the \Windows\Start Menu\ folder.
  3. Select the shortcut and open the Properties screen.
  4. Check the "Hidden" check box.
  5. Soft reboot your phone.

Dash and Mac OS X

Email and Exchange (Push Technology)
  • There are several companies/web sites offering free or inexpensive Microsoft Exchange Servers to use with the Dash or any other device supporting Push technology.
Here is one I can vouch for: http://live.mail2web.com/ Mail2web Live - There are two types of accounts: 1) "Free" or 2) "$4.95/month" account.
  1. Free - Use this account if you don't mind having the email that you reply to from the Dash look like it's coming from yourname@mail2web.com
  2. $4.95/month - Use this account if you prefer to keep your own email address when replying to email on your Dash. This also gives you SMTP and POP3 access if you want to check the email received in your mail2web account on your PC with a mail client.
NOTE: The $1.99 plan you read about on many message boards is now $4.95.
  • How to also Sync your Sent Items Folders (Save Sent Items is selected but Sent Items is Empty)
Assuming your settings are already in place for Outlook/Exchange/POP3 accounts:
  1. Press Start -> Messaging -> Outlook email (or any Other E-Mail Account you want to fix) press enter (central button) -> Menu
    -> Choose: 3 Folders -> Menu -> Choose: 2 Manage Folders
  2. Once there scroll down to Sent Items and you should see on the right key, Sync, press it and your Sent Items will from now on, sync with Exchange or your other email accounts (meaning your sent email will be remembered and stored in Sent Items).
  • Gmail With All Features (Report Spam, ability to label email, etc.) on the Dash (or any Windows Smartphone)
  1. On your PC login to your Gmail account.
  2. On the bottom of the page click "basic HTML".
  3. Type the address (URL) from your PC's browser into the Internet Explorer Address Bar on your Dash and select Go.
  4. Once your Gmail account opens, add it to your Favorites, then use this link in the future if you want to access Gmail with all features.

Displaying Chinese (& other regional) Text

I was looking for an easy way to get IE and Skype to display Chinese characters and came upon: http://www.airfagev.com/howtos_details.asp?id=77
1. Locate segoe.ttf & segoeb.ttf from your \Windows directory of WM5.0,
2. copy the 2 files to \Windows\Fonts directory of the WM5.0
3. Locate simsun.ttc from your WinXP Windows\Fonts directory, copy the file to \Windows\Fonts directory of the WM5.0
4. Edit your WM5.0 registry with the following

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FontPath]
"FontPath"="\\windows\\Fonts"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FontLink\SystemLink]
"Segoe Condensed"="\\windows\\Fonts\\simsun.ttc,NSimSun"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI]
"FontLinkMethods"=dword:1

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\GDI\SYSFNT]"Nm"="NSimSun"

5. Note: Simsun.ttc is a chinese font, you may wanna replace it with a regional font. NSimSun is the actual font name for Simsun.ttc, therefore remember to rename the value is Step 4 Nm=FontName

DASH AS A MODEM
- Share that EDGE goodness to your computer!
- Using your DASH as a modem REQUIRES the T-Mobile Total Internet add on.

Using the Dash as a USB/Bluetooth Modem to access the internet on your computer
  • Where is DUN on the Dash? Gone (in all WM 5.0 AKU3 devices by the way). Enters: PAN.
  • Menneisyys has done a great write-up HERE. Thank you!
  • Just a note: I read somewhere that you had to have activesync installed on the computer you are using with PAN, this is not true, I used a belkin usb bluetooth adapter to create a PAN network, without activesync installed. Worked like a charm.

Bluetooth DUN woes:
Several people have complained or realize they cannot connect their DASH via Bluetooth DUN to their Pocket PC devices, Nokia internet tablets, etc . T-Mobile can only apologize for the inconvenience and try their best to get the issue resolved, usually the issue eventually gets transferred to the Tier 3/ Wireless DATA services department where the final word is those setups are not supported. MSDN blogs will give you the latest updates on what Microsoft developers are thinking about regarding the Windows Mobile operating system. For example, in one blog, a WM developer gives his detailed insight on why Microsoft has removed the Bluetooth DUN protocol.

Is it possible to use a WM5/WM6 DASH as a modem on a PC or MAC?
Introduction:
The "modem" functionality is disabled and replaced with a program called "Internet Sharing" which allows you to simply connect the DASH to the computer without creating a manual DUN connection or adding the AT commands.

The term "...as a modem" is still widely used in the technical departments of T-Mobile, though it was originally meant for modems that accepted the Hayes AT command set.

Conclusion:
Yes, it is possible to to use your DASH as a modem, below are the supported setups.

System Requirements: Windows OS (preferably Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista) USB: Activesync 4.2 or higher (Win XP) / Updated version of Windows Mobile Device Center (Win Vista). Bluetooth: internal Bluetooth or external Bluetooth Adapter on PC

1. PC USB
  1. Make sure you're not connected to any other internet network on PC
  2. Connect USB cable to computer (Activesync may attempt to synchronize)
  3. Go to Start>Accessories>Internet Sharing
  4. PC Connection: USB
  5. Network Connection: T-Mobile Data
  6. Press Connect (the top left Soft Key near the green handset button)
  7. Browse the web (I.E. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, etc)

2. PC Bluetooth (assuming the device is already paired to your computer and USB cable is unplugged)
  1. Make sure you're not connected to any other internet network on PC
  2. Make sure Bluetooth is ON (on phone)
  3. Go to Start>Accessories>Internet Sharing
  4. PC Connection: Bluetooth PAN
  5. Network Connection: T-Mobile Data
  6. Press Connect (the top left Soft Key near the green handset button)
  7. Browse the web (I.E. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, etc)
How to use your WM5/WM6 DASH as a modem on a MAC
System Requirements: Bluetooth: OS 10.4.9, a Mac Computer :) USB: Parallels

1. MAC USB: Not officially supported (T-mobile Tech support only provides best effort support). The fellow DASH/MAC enthusiasts at Hackszine.com have published a workaround using Parallels desktop.
2. MAC Bluetooth:
  1. Make sure you're not connected to any other internet network on MAC (e.g. disconnect from Airport)
  2. On the Dash, turn on Bluetooth and put it in discover mode.
  3. Pair the Dash to the Mac from the Bluetooth menu.
  4. Go to Start>Accessories>Internet Sharing
  5. PC Connection: Bluetooth PAN
  6. Network Connection: T-Mobile Data
  7. Press Connect (the top left Soft Key near the green handset button)
  8. On the Mac, click on Bluetooth icon on the menu bar> "Join Network on T-mobile Dash" (name may vary).
  9. Browse the web (I.E. Firefox, Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari, etc)

GMAIL and IMAP on Dash If you begin to experience severe battery drainage and/or memory problems, AND you have IMAP installed (I am using Gmail as an example because I have tested it), you must consider the following: IMAP constantly downloads IMAP folders and messages. This can be a problem if you have a lot of files and folders in your Gmail account. After unplugging my dash from a full charge, I noticed that within a half hour (of non-use) the battery would read at 3/4. I found that by disabling the automatic send/recieve for the IMAP account by setting it to manual will solve the battery issue.

LOOKING for the following

  • Mac users to come up with their findings and comments.
  • How to change the keys assigned to unlocking the keypad (*). This arises as an issue in particular for the lefties. I suppose Space bar or the Right Menu Key would be good replacements.
  • How to disable XT9 permanently! (Upgrade to WM6)
  • A way to re-enable DUN under WM AKU3. It seems it wasn't removed just disabled.
  • How to back up your PIM (Personal Infomation Manager) File (contacts/notes/etc)
  • WM6 Specific section, e.g. Error 260 on DASH WM6 update, Requirements(AS 4.5, etc)
  • AN INDEX FILE!
  • A PAGE COUNTER!

Anonymous 5.99 plan IS working 2 Sep 7 2008, 4:18 PM EDT by Anonymous

In the past 2 months I have used the t-mobile 5.99 plan to access the entire internet with the instructions given above in the following places - Las Vegas, Pittburgh, Cleveland, Johnstown PA, Orlando area, Miami area Atlanta and probably more. many times when I have a problem, it is because there is not enough memory. I use the Task Manager to free up memory and if it still does not work, I power the DASH off and back on. Happy Surfing!

Anonymous Phone function / signal is on the fritz. Help! 2 Sep 3 2008, 12:00 PM EDT by Anonymous
Thread started: Dec 11 2007, 9:13 AM EST  Watch
I bought a Dash a while back and loved it. The screen went out on it and TMobile replaced it. The new one worked fine until 2 weeks ago.

Now, I will suddenly lose all signal. It will say "Searching..." for a few minutes, then "Phone Off." And then it's back to "Searching...". Sometimes the device itself reboots itself. It frequently goes back to working fine if I pop out the battery and pop it back in. What the hoof?

Anybody have a suggestion?
