Yes, you can buy a bluetooth GPS receiver to hook up to your TyTN. I used the Holux 236 with my AT&T 8525 (TyTN in the U.S.) before I switched to the AT&T Tilt. This Holux is a great unit and you can get it here:

http://www.buygpsnow.com/holux-gpslim-236-gr-236-gpslim236-holux-slim-holux-sirf-iii-holux-gps-bluetooth-gps-468.aspx

You can also buy GPS navigation software on buygpsnow.com. Most people I know have either TomTom 6 or iGuidance. You can also download WIndows Live Search at wls.live.com or Google Maps Mobile at www.google.com/gmm. Both of these are free and can make use of the GPS receiver, so long as you also have some sort of data connection either through your cellular carrier or wi-fi. These two applications require a datafeed to download the maps as opposed to TomTom 6 or iGuidance, which store the maps on the MicroSD card.

Hope this helps.

I've looked at both Tom tom 6 and iGuidance and I can't see that they are compatible with the TYTN at least not with the USA maps. The TYTN 11 was listed with Tom Tom 6 but not the TYTN. Does anyone know of USA sat nav maps that work with the TYTN? Thanks. Do you find this valuable?

Both are compatible with the TyTN. They don't specifically list it out, but I know they work becauase I have the U.S. version of the TyTN, the 8525, and both have worked fine on mine.

Is there a Web Site for available dedicated accessories for TyTN and its cousins? There may be, but I thought I should ask. Do you find this valuable?

There are plenty of online retailers that sell accesories. You can goto the following:

1. Mobile Planet - www.mobileplanet.com - This store has original HTC and Third Party Manufacturer accessories.
2. Boxwave Corporation -www.boxwave.com - This company makes what I think to be the best screen protectors. They are scratch resistant and reusable.

3. PocketPC Techs - www.pocketpctechs.com - Another company that makes some accesories. They are more well known for repairing devices. They also provide internal memory upgrades on older Windows Mobile Devices (WM2003/2003SE, PocketPC2002).

4. Handango - www.handango.com - This online retailer sells software and is an excellent plce to find almost anything you want.

Hope this helps. Let me know if there is something specific you are looking for.

You do not need to buy a receiver if you have a TYTN II. The receiver is built in the phone. I bought the Tom Tom Navigator 6 and installed it with no problems. Do you find this valuable?

Ok I've just about had it with this phone.

I have ATT's telenav and I want to use it obviously for it's GPS this/that capabilities. When it's plugged in to the USB connection, obviously it works but when disconnected it fails. I have NO data plan which is how I want it. Just like a standalone GPS unit, I'd like this to act as such. This was one of the ONLY reasons i chose this phone besides the tilt and qwerty keyboard.

So, with Telenav, NOT CONNECTED TO USB, is there a way, IN MY CAR, to get this #$% cellphone to work as a standalone GPS unit?

Thank you any and all who can respond! :)

When I first read you post I was confused. You mentioned having a TYTN (HTC-8525) which has no built in GPS. When you mentioned the tilt feature I realized you have the TYTN II (HTC-8925 aka Kaiser). The TYTN II is the Tilt and it has GPS built into the phone. No external GPS device is necessary. You can use AT&T's Telenav, but they charge you per month and you have to have a data plan. Google Earth is free, but you need a data plan with that since it downloads maps from the internet. There is a GPS page on this Wiki with detailed information on GPS, Quick GPS and about 10 different GPS programs you can buy that store the map data on your storage card (no data plan required) and give you turn-by-turn directions as you drive.

Check out: http://www.htcwiki.com/page/GPS+Software

I am using Pharos Ostia on my Tilt and it works great. I downloaded the maps for the western U.S. and Hawaii and used only 300MB on my 16GB storage card. When you set up your GPS software, most programs use COM4 and 4,800 bps settings. Make sure you update Quick GPS before you enable the GPS. Post back if you need more help.

I'm looking into the IGuidance software and it appears to look promising instead of purchasing an iPhone :) I will surely update this thread with my ultimate decision.

Thanks again!

iGuidance is highly rated and I have heard nothing but good things from those that use it. Good luck on the install/use of the product. Please post your experiences with it's use.

I have a TyTN II (great phone, really; and so is its "cousin" TyTN I, which I ran over with a Ford Escape and only had to change the LCD screen, the phone kept working!). If you do not want to spend money, you can download Google Maps or MS Bing (both for Mobile). They don't "speak", but will give you turn-by-turn directions, locate you and even follow you with the GPS (which is included in the TyTN II, just turn it over and you will see a small black "button", right next to the camera's eye, that reads "GPS"). Only downside: it eats battery like there's no tomorrow, so use it plugged to your car charger. Do you find this valuable?

Google Maps and Bing both download map segments from the internet as you drive. You need an unlimited data plan if you are going to use either program. If you buy one of the GPS software packages like iGuidance or Pharos Ostia the maps are stored on your storage card, so no data plan is required. In either case, (as eduardow points out) GPS eats battery quickly, so you need to be plugged into your car charger while you drive.

Hi outthere,
I run one of the Tytn 1 Kaiser units with an external bluetooth GPS antenna. For software I use the TomTom 6 software. All the software and Maps for Canafda and the US will fit on a 1 GB card. I unit will accomodate up to a 2 GB card, so you still have loads fo room. The only filaing I have right now is that my audio seems to have failed. Works fine with an external speaker so suspect my internal speaker is damaged. If abyone knows an easy fix for the speaker, please let me know.
