Inetrnet Using Wifi on 8525
Aug 8 2007, 1:10 PM EDT Even if the 8525 has a WiFi feature, you can't access the internet unless you pay the data package from AT&T. I don't see why a data package is required where in fact AT&T is not providing me any extra service. I pay Charter for my internet cable connection and I am using my own home wireless network. AT&T also failed to post information in ads or inform customer's that this 8525 WiFi feature will only work with a data package. It is a catch that some of my freinds also discovered. SO, unless you are willing to pay a hefty price for the data package with AT&T, don't expect that your smart phone 8525 can access internet even if it is capable. 7 out of 8 found this valuable. RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Oct 27 2007, 11:42 PM EDT I just found out the same thing. I purchased an HTC 6800 with WiFi and it would not recognize my home network. I will be hooking up with a Bell data package in a couple days and it should do WiFi then. Sucks that you need a data package for WiFi! 1 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nov 15 2007, 11:21 AM EST Have you tried setting your WiFi to Shared mode rather than infrastructure .. in any case make sure the the mode for both your router and your HTC are the same. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Nov 20 2007, 7:46 PM EST Please say more about Shared. When connected via USB to PC I can access the internet through my router as long as wireless mode is switched on. Can you create a setting that uses true wireless mode - perhaps through work VPN settings? 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

It worked for me. I posted a fix on Cingular/AT&T forum. That is the biggest complaint about wireless not working. Here is the fix at least for the Cingular branded phones. I have posted it before and I will post it again. Just make these simple changes and you will use wireless and not GPRS. Undo the change and GPRS will work again. 1. Start -> Settings 2. Select the Connections tab. 3. Click on the Connections icon. 4. Click on the Advanced tab. 5. Click on the Select Networks box. 6. The top setting is what the browser will use to connect to the Internet. After the ROM upgrade mine is set to "Media Net". You now have three choices, A, B or C. A. Use this if you will never get a data plan to permanently disable GPRS dialup. 1. With "Media Net " in the window, click on the Edit Box. 2 On the next screen, tap and hold on "Media Net" and slecet delete. You will not be able to use GPRS unless you create the "Media Net dialup entry again. B. Edit the My ISP setup. 1. Select "My ISP" in the top box and press theEdit box. 2. Tap and hold on Cingular GPRS and select delete. 3. When you what to use wireless, use the "My ISP" connection setup. When you want to use GPRS, use the "Media Net" connection setup. C. The change I made. Create a new connection setup. 1. Press the New box. 2. Enter a name for the new connection setting. I used "Wireless Internet". All other defaults work fine, so press oOK. 3. When you what to use wireless, use the "Wireless Internet" connection setup or what ever you named it. When you want to use GPRS, use the "Media Net" connection setup. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Dec 13 2007, 8:52 PM EST I found that this didn't work. I tried option B. I used My ISP with no modem. I receive the message that the network is available. Then it is connecting. Then it is available. No error messages. 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Dec 13 2007, 9:30 PM EST None of this is true, you do not need to purchase a data plan to use the wi-fi on any of these phones. My wife at first didn't want the data plan on her 8525 and we were still able to use the wi-fi at home or at any wi-fi hotspot. When I did it, I didn't need to make any changes to my connections settings. All I had to do was turn on the wi-fi and it would recognize that my network existed. I entered the WEP key (full hex key) and I was instantly on the network and surfing the net and pulling emails down for my wife. What I have not heard is how others are trying to connect. If you can tell me, I can try to help. 0 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Dec 14 2007, 6:48 PM EST Ok, I turned on Wifi and it found my network. I made sure all the settings were correct. I keyed in the wrong key purposely and it told me my key was wrong. So I know it is talking to my router. Then it says connecting, then it goes back to available. That is it. No error messages or anything. I also tried at Panera and I could not get in there either. Thank you. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Remember at Panera, once you do connect to their network, you have to goto your Internet Explorer and goto some webpage like CNN.com. It should automatically then re-route to Panera's website where it asks you to accept their terms and condtions to use the Internet. Then you should be able to get on. As for your home router, you mentioned that you purposely entered the wrong WEP key. But I didn't see you say that you tried entering the correct key and describing what happens. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Dec 15 2007, 1:05 PM EST Actually, I did say what happens. It says connecting, then it says available. That's all. It never gives an error message. At Panera, I have used the Wifi with my Palm Pilot. I know there is a procedure you have to go through. I never get to that part. It gave me an error message about an IP address or something. I know I should have written that down. Actually today, I did a soft reset on my 8525 and on my router. It connected for about 3 seconds. Then it went to available. I checked with my Palm Pilot and the wireless is fine. 0 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Feb 29 2008, 1:17 PM EST I don't know if I mentioned this. I received a new phone from AT&T and everything worked. I can get on anywhere. The only thing is that it does not like WPA. WEP works fine. So, it was my phone that was the problem. I still did have a problem at home. With my Dlink router. I have now switched to a Linksys router and it works great. So it was the phone. RE: Internet Using Wifi on 8525
Feb 29 2008, 1:20 PM EST As long as your are really using WiFi, you will not be charged. Just remember that if you log on and you haven't turned on Wifi. The phone will still connect to the internet. But you will be charged. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
