ROM update not working
May 2 2007, 8:10 PM EDT
I have a 8525 from Cingular and downloaded the ROM upgrade utility but am having considerable trouble getting the upgrade to work. These are the things I have tried:

1. Run the utility after syncing the 8525 with my computer and still connected to the USB cable
---> result: I get the tri-color screen with USB at the bottom; if I continue on and select next: I eventually get a 264 error code

2. Run the utility first then connect the 8525 via USB after the utility has finished examining the computer; I sync with the computer and then select next; I select the upgrade; then select next; the screen goes black on the 8525 and I lose connection with the computer (battery is full and no other programs running); then get an error messae 260.

Please help.

did you download the leached version on the ROM update prior? If so you have to change back to the other radio version before you can update.

I has the same problem. I ended up doing the steps on a windows 2000 professional computer and all worked well. all attempts failed on winxp and windows2003. it seems that something is wrong with the installer code. if you have a win2k pro machine around i would try it on that box. just ignore the tri-color screen. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. I am having the same problem. I was so excited to load this update. Oh well, at least the failed attempts did not fry my phone. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hears What to do. There is a missing step in the online instruction on america.htc.com
Once you connect the USB and you start the update, DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE AT ALL.
your device will shut down and come bacvk on with tri-color screen (Which is good.) at the bottom it will show the conneted usb symbol at the buttom. let it run for full complete 25mins. And thats it.

I did what you suggested and still got error 260. It lost the connection and Activesync went off as well. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

I battled with this the first day the ROM was released. You should connect the USB cable BEFORE you start the update. It will change the colors on the phone to the 4 big bars.. Go through the steps in the update. It will attempt to show you what version is on the phone, but it will be blank. Just click Next (or whatever) and start the update. Should roll from there. If you start the update, then plug in the phone when it prompts you to, it will disconnect just like you have been experiencing. It took me about 5 tries to finally figure out when to plug in. 5  out of 6 found this valuable. Do you?

Error 260 is an open port issue with your PC. Try this: Diconnect USB, power PC down, plug USB into a different port, power PC up and try to run the RUU wizard again. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Aye, all you gotta do is install ActiveSync 4.5 and connect the device before you start the installer! I was having trouble with Activesync 4.2, but after that upgrade it was all sweet! 1  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

I tried this with Vista with no luck but on WinXP, this method works great!
Thanks

You are a star, whoever you were... HTC people, if any, here or if any can pass the note to them: change the bloody instructions! it took me almost 3 hours of trial and errors and internet surfing to fin this 3 lines. That was all I needed.

My problem during my initial upgrade something happened and now all I get is the 3 colored screen. The software attempted to reconnect to my device several times before saying that it cannot connect. Now I cannot connect via ActiveSync, I upgraded mine to 4.5 also and I also tried a hard reset. I get the warning screen, but when the device restarts, the same 3 colored screen appears. I hope I have not bricked my device. I email HTC, if I get any useful information I will be sure to post it here.. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Upgrade to Active Sync 4.5, let it do a full sync of your data. Reboot your computer and reset your phone. Run through the Wizard again. That is what I had to do. I think the key is to have Active Sync 4.5. 0  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

BINGO! Don't you hate it when the #$(*%^ engineers that designed the damned software did such a crappy job documenting the usage that 99% of the people trying to use it fail?? ARRRGH!

Ignore the documentation. Plug in your 8525 and let ActiveSync do its thing. Then start the upgrade. The phone will go black, then show three colored bars. The screen showing the ROM version will indeed be blank, but once you proceed, you will immediately see a progress bar light up on the phone and then shortly thereafter the progress bar will light up on the PC. The damned doc is wrong. So much for RTFM!

I had the same problems with lost connection. I did following step:
- connected my HTC P3600 to Computer (USB)
- done the sync
- started the update utility, the connection goes lost (error 264 or 260)
- my HTC remains with the 3-color bar
- terminated the update utility with tapping on exit-button, HTC left connected
- startet the update utility again, the update finished successful
It seems to me, like the HTC changed his Identity when it was turning to the 3-color-bar screen and Active Sync lost the connection.
