ROM Update
Apr 30 2007, 11:48 AM EDT
Under the support page, the picture for the ROM update shows 2.15.502.3 but when you click on the download link, it keeps giving you the 2.15.502.1 version of the ROM, does any anyone know when the download link will updated with the correct ROM Version, also once I downloaded .1 version, I lost the ability to use the 8525 as a wireless modem for my laptop, the icon in Programs that was titled "Wireless Modem" is gone.

The correct ROM was posted late last night..
Wireless Modem is repleced by Internet Sharing in the new ROM; it is much easier to tether now. Do you find this valuable? |

To tether with the new ROM, after your have your device connected to your PC (USB ot BT) and Activesync shut down, all you need to do is launch Internet Sharing on your device, select your connection type from the PC Connection drop down and Connection from the Network Connection drop down and then tap Select.

Has anyone noticed the bandwidth throttling since the new ROM update? I was getting 800k when dialing up through the phone and now I'm getting 300k using Internet Sharing. When I do a bandwidth test at CNet from the phone I get over 1Mb, but when performing the same test from the tethered computer I'm getting 300k.

This is dues to 'time of day' and 'area usage' limits on the system you are/were connected to. The backbone has a maximum bandwidth it can support, and that is dependent on the amount of voice traffic the site has to accommodate. The is no code in the phone that restricts the available bandwidth, but the 8525 can multitask, and may be been downloading something from your carrier while you were running your test. Do you connect with USB or Bluetooth. it makes a huge difference in the lab. I hope that if you return to read this, you'll have already figured out that the speed you are used to will return as the system can allocate. There is not restriction in the HTC device.

"This is dues to 'time of day' and 'area usage' limits on the system you are/were connected to"Nope, anonymous above is most certainly correct. I have two 8525 devices and tested them both before, during and after the upgrade. Before the upgrade, both devices would sustain 1mbps speeds performing a tethered download of MSVPC 2007 from Microsoft's website (approx 122kb / sec) After I upgraded the first one, the tethered speed fell to no more than 380kbps (approx 46kb / sec). Here's the kicker -- the second device, six inches from the first, was still downloading at ~122kb /sec. After its upgrade, it too fell to around 45kb / sec. Rather suspicious that I can run both devices within six inches of eachother and the "new" version be only capable of 30% of the speed -- and don't give me any lip about signal degredation or whatnot. I spent a day testing this, and I can definitely point to the new rom. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Nice Update!
I hioe this isn't to far off this thread - Out of curiosity do you have to do a daily reset of your 8525 - something I've had to do for the past 4 months. Do you know if the updated ROMs include WM6? Do you know if there is a way to revert after the upgrade? Thanks, Mark mrgilbert@hotmail.com Do you find this valuable? |

Has anyone figured out a work around or a way to get the wireless modem functionality back? I'd rather have the bandwidth... 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

I made the original post about the bandwidth throttling. I've extensively poked around the registry and mucked with serial port configurations to get my machine to just use the phone as a dial up networking modem again. So far, no avail. The closest I can get is a Connection Script Failed message in the connection log when trying to use the modem script that worked with the previous ROM. I don't fully understand all of this so I'm taking stabs in the dark, but what I do know is that I used to get more then I am now. The 2.15 ROM is a good update otherwise so far as my experience has been.I managed to get the IP address of the Intenret Sharing NAT to be what I wanted it to be. To Change the Internet Sharing IP Address: 1) Change the unit's IP address - HKLM\Comm\BTPAN1\TcpIp\IpAddress 2) Change the last known DHCP Client IP address - HKLM\Comm\ConectionSharing\Addresses I'll post more if I learn anything. Otherwise, I just keep checking back here and watching for any development in the thread. -Neil Do you find this valuable? |

I could use a bit of help with the new Internet sharing feature. When I tether via a USB cable, and turn on the connection, my XP workstation finds a RNDIS modem, and starts looking for software. I spent an hour on the phone with HTC, and never could get the PC to connect.
