Touchscreen Problems on HTC Universal (O2 XDA Exec branding)
Jan 8 2007, 6:04 AM EST | Post edited: Jan 8 2007, 6:04 AM EST
I have had my HTC Universal for more than a year now and from last month, I have started to experience issues with the touchscreen. Many times during the day, touchscreen stops to work. First I thought the OS is crashed but I noticed I could still use the keyboard.

Sometimes the problem goes away with aligning the screen but in most cases it just doesn't work. I have to play with it for few minutes before it starts working again. I did a hard reset once and I was stuck on the screen alignment for few minutes. This seems to be a hardware related issue as the problem did not go away with a hard reset. Has anybody else had a similar problem? If not, I will have to ask O2 to have a look at it.

Hi there,

I have the same issue, I have HTC Universal (O2 XDA Exec branding) too.
What i figued out is that if you tap using your fingers on the back of the display (in the corners), the touch screen works again.
It seams that the touchscreen is getting pressed on the top right, for no reason.

I have the HTC XV6700 and I have had the phone for just about a month i love it, but all of a sudden today its been giving me a lot of problems with the touch screen, not recognizing it, so, yes HTC might have a problem over more models than just yours... It comes on and goes off randomly it seems. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Yes I have expericed this Problem, In furrther inspection of the Phone I noticed that about 5 real little wires bunched in a set leading from the base ie keyboard of the phone through the swivel touch screen of the phone were worn through and broke the connection to the screen the cable or the screen needs to be replaced not sure which you will need to contact hardware support for a replacement sorry :( 2  out of 3 found this valuable. That worked for me on my HTC Touch! My touchscreen stopped working entirely, even after several power-downs. I tapped the four corners of the screen firmly and it started working again! Thanks for the tip! 2  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

what exactly do you mean the back of the display? i have the 6800 and i'm assuming you're talking about the back of the screen once it slides out. and i don't see what u mean by the screen is being pressed for no reason. please be a bit more descriptive, thanx!

I had the same problem, my screen protector in one corner was "pushing" down on the screen causing it to be stuck. 3  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi, I had the same problem. My problem is worst with my HTC Touch as I will have to set the passowrd to access the phone because our microsft exchange policy which is configured on my mobile. Now my touch screen is not at all working and handset is asking for the password so I am helpless. Softreset does not work and not able to hard reset because of password not enterable. Can any one suggest me the solution. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

This will be my third htc touch, and I don't know if I want another. it was the same thing, for some reason the screen does not respond. lucky for me I am still under warranty. This is a big problem for me,They messed up the order so I have to wait another 3to 5 days to get a phone.... so far it's been 5 days. my last phone not only stop responding. but went into locked mode.. now it's useless.I like the htc phones, they are my favorite, but i need a back-up. i will be looking for a phone with a qwerty board so I can still use it. Hi, I have the HTC touch from bell. I too had the same problem with my screen. It stopped working completely. The phone is pretty much useless without the touch screen working, there is only 3 buttons on the phone! Can't even dial 911... So I was pretty pissed when the screen stopped working. Like others I searched the internet for answers and didn't really find too much. I found that maybe tapping the four corners of the screen firmly might work, but it didn't. Taking the protective cover off the screen might work, didt't work. I tried updating the ROM, using the official software from HTC website. I was able to update my phone, but my touch screen still didn't work. Someone said something about some copper connections inside the phone, need to be re-adjusted behind the screen or something like that. So I willing opened the phone (only 4 hex screws on the back) and took the front plastic cover off. If you look closely, you'll see the front cover is plugged into the 'motherboard' and you can simply unplug it. I unplug it and plug it back in, do a restart of the phone (take battery out and back in) and still nothing, screen doesn't work.
I noticed that on the front cover of the phone (underneath) you can see the copper band of wires that connect to the buttons and probably feeds the information from the touch screen to the 'computer'. I accidentally unplugged the wire (thought I broke it) but was able to insert it back in. I put the the cover back on, put the battery in, power up phone, BINGO! Touch screen works! What I did to make it work? Not sure...
But for people with the same problem. Try this:
1) update ROM
http://www.htc.com/us/SupportDownload.aspx?p_id=70&cat=2&dl_id=98
2) Unplug and plug back in that little wire.

Its the red circle I'm talking about.

Hi, I had the same problem with my Cruise. The touchscreen seems to get separated slightly from the cover screen. By bending the screen the touch screen will re-engage with the cover. Be careful as you may exacerbate the problem. I thiought my Cruise was a goner six months ago. Still working fine. Do you find this valuable?
