Sprint Hero: Old app versions come back after restart

I've upgraded a few apps through the Market. When I power down/up my phone the old versions re-appear! I know this because I use Astro to backup the new files to the SD card and when I run Astro after power cycle it shows the old app versions in red.

Even deleting and reinstalling those apps will revert them after power cycle. I believe this issue is related to the Google Sky Map issue previously posted. I noticed that some apps say to remove the old app before updating to the new version.

Aside from a factory reset is there any way to positively get rid of the obsolete versions?
Do you find this valuable?

I figured out what is going on. Seems removing the app is not clearing the /data/boot-cache entries for the app. If you delete those (requires root) then all is ok.
