HTC Pro 2 Desk top remote
Oct 21 2009, 11:07 AM EDT | Post edited: Oct 21 2009, 11:07 AM EDT
When trying to use remote desk top I get the following error message.
Cannot connect likely reasons are:
1.The remote computer is not setup for this.
2. Reached the maximum number of connections.
3. A network error occured while connecting

I have the laptop setup for remote access by checking remote access box.
I have a linksys router and for computer name I am putting in the IP Adress 192.168.1.1 and my username and password.
Can someone please help. I was using it when I first got the phone but had to do a reset and lost my settings on the phone. The laptop and linksys settings remain the same.

Please advise.

On your laptop go.

Start>Control Panel>System>Remote Settings.

Make sure a remote connection is allowed and set to any computer/security level.

The WiFi should be on.

Make sure any data connections are off as well, I think the remote connection app gets confused on which connection to use if you have the wifi on and the data connection on.

Make sure that not only is the wifi on, that you are also connected to the network.

Your device will never default to your cellular data connection if you have a wifi connection, FYI. Wifi trumps 3G.

well my device will have the wifi and data connection on at the same time, and that confuses the desktop remote connection, and Resco explorer when browsing the network 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Don't worry about the data connection being on, that's OK as long as WiFi is on. Did you get my PM? 2  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

O.K., several items need to be corrected. 1) You need the front end ip address of your router. This is the one that is greyed out in the settings. This is your actual address. If it is not greyed out or accessible, there are many sites, whatsmyip.com, etc to find your actual IP address. 2) You must configure port fowarding on the router to send the RDT to the correct computer. RDT accepts calls on port 3389, so the port fowarding should be set in the routers settings. This has to be done manually. Set all incoming requests on port 3389 to go to 192.168.x.x. The x.x is the computers actual address. Only once the port fowarding is configured will RDT work. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Great information EdgewordMI, though he's been trying to connect from the same network that his PC is on. He shouldn't have to follow any of these steps for what he's doing at the moment. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Windows firewall also needs to be told to allow RDT. In the Start- (Right click) My Computer-Properties-Remote, make sure the allow Remote Desktop is checked. Then double check the Windows firewall will allow RTD. It should be listed in the exceptions tab and checked. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

You can also try using the actual computer name not the ip address if you are on the same side of the firewall...It's under start-rick click My Computer -properties-computer name. Use what is listed under full computer name. Exactly as it is written. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I run Windows XP and Linux Mint. I am able to log in remotely to both systems. I really think you should check out some of the forums in regards to networking. A good foundation of the basic concepts behind networking may better assist you. I'd bet that if you go look your IP address has changed again MAMcGhee. Let me know if it did. You are much better off using the computer name than the IP address. The IP addresses are dynamically allocated by the router in most networks, so IP addresses will change depending on how many other users are logged onto the network and whether you logged off and logged back on lately. The computer name doesn't change unless you change it.
