Syncronization? Where did my contacts go?

I had to hard boot my phone recently. I've been syncronizing my phone so I thought that when I syncronized I would get my contacts back, but no, I got all my contacts out of outlook but my telephone contacts and numbers are not in there. What happened? all this time I've been syncronizing and the phone hasn't been uploading my phone numbers to my computer or are they there in a different file somewhere? I've been syncronizing with outlook. Do you find this valuable?
