Sep 20 2009, 8:40 AM EDT
is someone aware if there is a max no of apps one can install on htc touch pro? i have lots of room in device an storage card. when i try to install anything more, my device tells me it was unsuccessful. I can't sync to save contacts or other info. I want to avoid a hard reset. Also, i can't rename folders or files or delete them with file manager. I can still take pictures and download files an create new files through apps. Has anyone else experienced this?

Go to Start>Settings>System Tab>Memory. You need at least 10MB of free program memory for the device to work well. 25 MB is better. If your program memory is low, go to the Comm Manager and stop the programs that are running the background. You can also do this by doing a soft reset. When you exit programs, they leave a kernel running in the background (in program memory) to speed up the loading process when you next call up that app. If you have too many programs sitting in program memory, it bogs down the device. Thanks for that.. It never works no matter how many programs I've opened. I just checked to ensure that some bugaboos in the background weren't chewing up memory, but I've got 110 MB free of program memory and still not installing programs. I was thinking maybe there was some registry fix or something I could do, but I can't help but feeling this is hopeless. I love computers. They make life so easy. Fred Do you find this valuable? |

"Yes.Well, that took care of the quick, easy fixes. If you have 110 MB of free program memory and the device still won' t allow you to install new programs it sounds a bit more complicated. Do you have Sprite Backup on your device? and if so, will it backup your device info to your storage card? If you can successfully backup your data to your storage card, a hard reset isn't as daunting as it sounds and may be your best solution. But let's continue trouble shooting before you resort to that. What new programs are you trying to install? Are you trying to install from CAB files? Give us some more details and we'll see if anyone has some good ideas. Just remember to err is human .. to really screw things up takes a computer! Do you find this valuable? |

Mostly, I've tried to install apps from pocketpcfreeware sites, but I've also tried a couple of upgrades for different programs that already exist on my phone like SkyFire for instance. Nothing works. What I find really intriguing is that I can't manipulate files passed creating folders with the "New Folder" name in file manager. Renaming or deleting attempts tell me there is access violations. The other thing my Phone stopped doing for me is allowing me to send pictures by email. By the way, my service provider is Bell (in Canada). No - I don't have Sprite backup unless it is something that came with my phone. I think I am going to be wishing I did have it, aren't I? I can back up all the files to my computer, but I don't know how to backup contacts, tasks, etc without active sync working. Do you find this valuable? |

If you don't see the icon in the Tools menu, you probably don't have it. If you do have it, you can backup the entire phone to your storage card and then do a hard reset followed by a Sprite Restore which will bring the data back. If you have Sprite Backup and want to go the hard reset route, post back and I will give you some pointers on what to backup and what to not backup before doing a hard reset. No Sprite backup. No st-pr-tools folder either.Worse news. I thought I could copy the stuff through PC interface. However, when I try to paste into my laptop, I get a file access permission denied error from my HTC. It appears I'm totally hooped. There must be a way to retrieve the stuff. There must. "No Sprite backup. No st-pr-tools folder either.Bad news about not having Sprite Backup. Am I correct that you can download files from the PC to the device but can't transfer files from the device to the PC? If you are transferring files using file explorer (thru ActiveSync) are you trying to drag and drop the files or doing actual cut and paste? It shouldn't matter which way you do it, but I have run into cases where drag and drop transfers fail and cut and paste will succeed. Since you can download files to your device, any chance you could download the Sprite Backup cabfile and then execute it to get Sprite Backup on the phone? Probably not since you have said you can't load programs. I recently had to trade in my Tilt for a new one. The AT&T service techs offered to transfer all my data for me. I was already backed up to a storage card so I took care of it myself, but I wonder if your carrier can pull info out of your device (like a hard disk rescue on a PC that crashed)?
