Touch Pro Black Screen o' Death
Jul 9 2009, 3:44 PM EDT | Post edited: Jul 9 2009, 3:44 PM EDT
So my 37 day old TP crapped out on me last night. First I noticed the keyboard wouldn't light up, then instead of going completely asleep, the screen was sorta back lit in black(glowing black). So I shut it down and powered it back up and the screen remained black, but you could hear it boot. Tried to soft reset, removed the battery and memory card etc with no luck. Started searching the internets and found a lengthy discussion about the same problem many people have been having( http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49006)

Went to a service center today and after a two hour wait, they said they would have to send me a "new" one from the manufacturer. "New" being a refurb. Just tossing this out here for folks who are or will have the same problem.

That's really a bummer about the refurbed phone in place of a new one. I don't know who your carrier is, but I have AT&T and they will give you a new phone for the first 30 days if your phone shows up DOA or dies quickly (they might stretch it a litte if you've been a long time customer). But after that it's a refurb phone.

I got a Fuze (Touch Pro) from AT&T that started screwing up shortly after I got it, and they sent me a new one. I just had my Tilt stop working, and I got a refurb replacement for that. The refurb looks just like a new one so it wasn't a big deal, but it was replacing a 14 month old phone - not a brand new one.

37 days after I got it. Using Sprint. They have the same deal if it's within 30 days. Do you find this valuable?

And they won't agree to "squeeze" a few extra days and give you a new phone?

"Good customer service, eh?"
I guess they have to cut it off at some point, but it seems like 30 days is a bit short. That seems to be the industry standard.

I'm experiencing the exact same issue. Mine turns on, I hear the noises, but I see nothing but the slight illumination of the back light. Looks like I'll be replacing this thing. How unfortunate too, I was really enjoying the custom ROMs that are available for this device! Do you find this valuable?

If you're sending the device back to the carrier for a refurb replacement and have flashed a custom ROM, if they pick up on the cooked ROM they will tell you that you voided your warrantee and not replace the device even with a refurbed one.
