HTC Touch Pro - little camera on front
Jun 24 2009, 2:01 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 24 2009, 2:01 PM EDT
Does anyone know how to activate the little camera that is to the left of the ear piece on the front of the phone? I'm not talking about the one on the back - the 3.0 megapixel one. I'm talking about the .5 one on the front. I read someplace it was to be used for video conferencing.

Thanks

Hi,
I found some good peace of information on that's my way to bring help too :-)
to activate the little cam
first go to cam
choose the camera's icon (on the upper right corner)
the cam is now activated. Touche the screen. Go to settings (the wheel on the left corner at the bottom).
Chose the icon "photo camera"
and voilà !
note that you'll have to do this every time you want to use this small cam.

Different carriers have different versions of the same basic phone built for them. My AT&T Tilt is an HTC-8925 aka HTC TYTN II aka HTC Kaiser. The TyTN II has the front camera plus the back camera. The Tilt only has the back camera. I think the different versions of the Touch Pro are like that. My AT&T Fuze is an HTC Touch Pro with only the back camera.

I suggest you contact HTC tech support and ask them (866-449-8358). They are in Bellview, Washington so call during business hours (Pacific Time)

HTC prepares ROMs to Alltel's specs., and it seems unlikely to me that Alltell would have a ROM prepared that doesn't use all the physical devices on the phone. HTC may be able to provide you with info. or perhaps a software patch that adds the camera module for the small camera. Are you sure it's not accessible from the controller for the bigger camera?

Mostly that camera is for video calling, if the carrier does not support video calling ( like AT$T ) then they generally do not add software for that camera to the rom.

But as Sqarrela says, it is all up to the carrier.

Yeah i'm quite positive it isn't there. I tried pushing where it should be, the blank spot on it, and it just goes back to the regular camera.

Sorry I can't help you much there. Do you have the lense in the upper right corner ? It you do, I am pretty sure there's a way to unlock it.

Hey Den - I think many of these carrier ROMS are customized for the carrier by HTC by just turning off registry keys rather than removing the software. I wonder if the small camera has a registry key that is just disabled, and could be enabled or added back (if it's been removed) with a reg edit?

If no reg edit can fix the problem, it seems likely that XDA would have a custom ROM with the small camera software driver built in. Is it possible that the small camera driver could be ripped from the custom ROM and added to his device as a .CAB file. Rather than going thru flashing an entire new ROM?

Or perhaps if he downloaded a new dialer with video calling enabled, I will check into it and post a compatible dialer with video calling.

About time you got a profile pic............... ; )

Video calling enabled dialer sounds like the way to go if you can find one.

I guess with a profile pic I'm here to stay ......... : )

I find it hard to believe that they would put the ccd and lens in the phone and not the supporting hardware. Can you see if the ccd is wired to the mother board? If it is wired to the MB and denco7 is able to find a video calling endabled dialer, I would load it and see what you get.

I found this interesting and called HTC. I have the Fuze from At&t. I was told that it's an additional service from At&T which is used for video conferencing (big in Europe reportedly) and has to be acttivated through the carrier. Do you find this valuable?

if htc says it doesn't have the hardware, it probably has the lens (part of the case) but not the ccd or rom code. carrier subsidized phones are usually mutilated garbage vs. the open market versions. you'll probably find the fm radio has been diked from the us version of the touch pro as well. if you want an uncrippled phone, don't buy the carrier version next time. you're sol this time.
