Microssoft My Phone
Jun 16 2009, 3:38 PM EDT | Post edited: Jun 16 2009, 3:38 PM EDT
If you havent seen/tried this, you should! This app/service syncs the content from your phone to a web portal that is linked to your Windows Live Account.
I have backed up all of the Text Messages, Photos, Videos, Contacts, Calendar, Music, etc from my device to MyPhone account so in the event of a disaster, I can reload all of it on my device or another one.
Check it out: www.myphone.microsoft.com
Be sure to check out their Help section too, there is a bunch of info there: http://myphone.microsoft.com/mkweb/Help.po?mkt=en-US

I have also started using this and I agree, it's great. I have also tried Dashwire but I think Microsoft My Phone is better. Do you find this valuable?

It sounds like a great service for most info. I would be concerned about certain proprietary information being on Microsoft's storage devices. Do you have any idea how secure the data is? I keep a lot of personal info. in Spb Wallet which is encripted. I assume your account is a password protected logon, but I wonder how they keep your data safe?

Thanks for the information. I've been MIA for a while on my Phone knowledge. However, isn't this the same as a Sprite Back Up to an SD Card?

It's just another way to backup data. In this case you're backing up on line to Microsoft's servers.

Sprite Backup to your storage card gives you complete control of your data, since it's on your storage card. It also leaves you vulnerable to losing the data if the phone is lost or stolen and the storage card is in the phone. One of my employees had his briefcase stolen and lost his phone (with storage card) and his laptop. Fortunately, he also had a Sprite Backup of his device stored on a storage card that was back at our office (we always back up to two storage cards). When he got the new laptop and phone, he synced his data from the backup storage card to the new phone, then from the phone to the PC and was back in business with no data lost. If he had been backed up to Microsoft MyPhone I think he could have done the same thing. I'm always concerned about the security of my data if it's on someone else's server.

Does anyone know a program that will pull contacts from the SIM and not just from those saved only to the "phone"? Do you find this valuable?

It is a function within WM6.1. Go to Start>Programs>Tools>SIM Manager>Menu>Save to Contacts. You highlight all your SIM contacts and when you Save to Contacts, this will save the contacts on the SIM card to Contacts on the device, then back up the Contacts using Sprite Backup to your storage card, or sync to your PC using ActiveSync (XP) or WMDC (Vista).

I used this service for few days when it was launched. But I found one major drawback. The service synchronises (and saves on Microsoft servers) only the "Outlook Contacts" from the phone. I, for example, save all my contacts as "Windows Contacts" so that they are always in sync with my email account (using Windows Live for Windows Mobile). My Windows contacts are not sync'ed by MyPhone. So for me its only a method to save my pictures, SMS etc. Irony is.... MyPhone, Windows Live , Windows Contacts and Outlook are all Microsoft products and some get sync'ed with each other and some do not!!!!! Surely, this cannot be called Convergence (also read as Convenience). Microsoft should make its products compatible with each other. I have since stopped using this service owing to the drastically limited utility for me. Do you find this valuable?

I think its pretty safe. All tho everything has risks, and anything can be hacked. Just look at all the hotmail passwords that got hacked.

They just did an up date that will pull from you storage card, not sure if it will work on a sim. Do a manual sync and it will tell you it is mandatory. Go into settings and check the settings for what you want to sync. You must manual sync to get upgrade. Do you find this valuable?
