80. RE: New HTC Fuze ROM Released

Hi, I have the Fuze with WM6.5 but the ROM on it is a lower version than the upgrade is. Do I go ahead and download the upgrade or was it meant for WM6.1?

"Hi, I have the Fuze with WM6.5 but the ROM on it is a lower version than the upgrade is. Do I go ahead and download the upgrade or was it meant for WM6.1?"Are you sure you have WM6.5 on your Fuze? Unless it's a cooked version that didn't come from AT&T it is probably 6.1. AT&T hasn't come out with a 6.5 for the Fuze yet. The original OS on the Fuze was WM6.1 and the new upgraded ROM that we have been talking about in this thread is still WM6.1, but it's an upgraded version with some of the "bugs" fixed. Go to Start>Settings>System Tab>About and it will tell you the version you are running - Probably Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional. The second line of that page has the Build Number. That is the actual version of the WM O.S. that you are running. If the newer version is a higher build number than the one you are running, you should upgrade to benefit from the fixes in the upgraded ROM. If it does say Windows Mobile 6.5 post back where you got the ROM. Do you find this valuable? |

I just got this AT&T locked HTC Fuze - Raphael phone off ebay and am with AT&T. It is described as being "HardSPL'ed and is running ROMEOS 1.95 (windows mobile 6.5)". It does say 6.5 Professional when I went to the About Tab. The build is 21222.5.0.1. I honestly know nothing about all this stuff but I would like to have a current and good running device.

In that case you already have a more advanced ROM than 6.1 so don't install the new ROM upgrade, unless you want to go back to an "official ROM" that is released by AT&T. The HardSPL means your phone was unlocked (in order to flash the new ROM) so you could us it with any carrier that supports GSM by switching SIM cards. You will probably get better performance from the 6.5 custom ROM than most AT&T ROMS. If you want more info about cooked (custom) ROMs go to www.xda-developers.com and search for ROMEOS 1.95. If you run into problems with your ROM send a PM to denco7 on this Wiki. He has been experimenting with 6.5 roms for quite a while and just suggested that I try a cooked rom on my Fuze. I'm glad I waited instead of just going ahead with the download that appeared to be needed. Also I was wondering if you know anything or if you think it's possible that the 4GB Kingston SD HC that came with it would make it act funny when it's inserted. Do you think it could be bad and just get a new one? Do you find this valuable? |

You can get a new 8GB micro SD from www.cellphoneshop.com for about $20.00 USD. A 4 GB is $11.00 USD. It comes from China, but you can generally get free shipping and it takes about 3-5 days. Amazon.com has them too, but they are a little more expensive there. I recommend the 8GB at least so you can backup your phone to the SD card often to keep from losing data if the phone bombs out. Since the SD cards are so cheap, I always back up to two SD cards, and keep one locked in my desk. That way if I lose the phone (or someone steals it) I still have a recent backup. Sprite Backup may be included in your ROM. If not, you can buy it on line for about $30. There is also a free demo. It's a small price to pay for not losing all your data. There are some real horror stories on this Wiki of people that have lost 500 to 1000 contacts and several years worth of calendar entries because they didn't sync to their PC or backup to a storage card. It takes Sprite Backup about 5 minutes to back up your entire device to your storage card. You can even schedule the backups to occur every day at a time when you're not likely to be using your phone. I use 3:00am. Do you find this valuable? |

Sorry to change the subject, but it's at least it may be new-ROM related. For the past few months my Fuze has been randomly soft resetting. It never happened with the original ROM. There's no rhyme or reason to it whatsoever, though. I do have SPB Mobile Shell 3.0 installed. Could that have anything to do with it? Has anyone experienced the same issue?

I have found Spb tech support to be very accomodating and interested in problems and interferences between their software and WM Operating Systems. You should email them with your question. They may know about the issue. Because they are in St. Petersburg, Russia, it may take them a day to get back to you, but they are really great about following thru. Do you find this valuable? |

"Thank you for the suggestion. I do have MS 3.0.1, and I've emailed tech support at SPB. Could it possibly be related to the new Fuze ROM?"It surely could. The new Fuze ROM has solved a lot of problems, but I've heard it has created a few. This could be one of them. One easy way to rule out Mobile Shell as the culprit is to backup the Mobile Shell settings (you do that within Mobile Shell) then uninstall the program. If the auto resets continue, you know it's not Mobile Shell. If they stop, I would report that to Spb. Either way you can reload Mobile Shell and reload the settings and you don't have to go thru re-creating your Mobile Shell Today Screen. Do you find this valuable? |

Thankfully I haven't customized Mobile Shell too much, so it's not a big deal to uninstall. Thanks as always for your insightful advice! Do you find this valuable? |

Although I really like the Mobile Shell interface, If ound that with it installed I ahd a few glitches in my phone. I tried it with and without Mobile Shell and concluded that Mobile Shell was the culprit. The glitches were minor inconveniences but sufficient to hinder my productivity. By tweaking TouchFlo with Advanced Configuration Tool I have learned to like it. I especially find it useful when sliding out the keyboard from standby. This offers instant on and quick access to some of the tools I need, which I was not able to do with MS. Mobile Shell is a great product and I would encourage anyone to try it out for free and decide which is best for you.

Thanks as always for your insightful advice!"I find Touch Flo to be pretty clunky and cumbersome, but if Mobile Shell 3.0 has too many bugs, you could look at going back to 2.0. I used 2.0 for a long time and found it to be bulletproof. I love 3.0, but I agree with VolsFan that a few little bugs have shown up in my Tilt since MS 3.0. Not sure it's 3.0, but not sure it's not either. Predictive text is kinda fragged and a few other little things ... not enough to send me back to TouchFlo. I'd rather stick with it and help Spb debug it. Do you find this valuable? |

I've also found the icons to not respond consistently to touch. Like everyone's said, they aren't anything drastic, but they're enough to get annoying every now and then. Still, it's a really great interface and will only get better with time! I'll try uninstalling and see if my stability improves. Do you find this valuable? |

I sometimes have to "chase" an icon on the screen to get it to respond. I was hoping they fixed that in 3.0.1. So far I'm using 3.0.0 and haven't taken the time to upgrade. Please let me know what happens when you uninstall it. Don't forget to backup your Mobile Shell settings first, so you can pull them back in when you reinstall the program. I uninstalled it yesterday afternoon, and my device has been running more smoothly. Also, I had forgotten to mention my emails were not coming in per the schedule (every 10 minutes) I'd set within Windows. Now that I'm back to TouchFlo that problem has been vastly improved. It's not perfect, but for some reason it's working better than with MS. I still firmly believe that MS, while less flashy, is certainly a better interface than TouchFlo. However, it looks like it may be a version away from equal reliability. Do you find this valuable? |

You don't need to remove the SIM card...but you MUST remove any storage cards. Also make sure to back up all your data.

I upgraded the ROM and have not yet experienced any of the issues that are listed in this thread. But I have a totally different issue that I have noticed. Since updgrading, I have not been able to customize the wallpaper if TouchFLO is selected. Regardless of what i pick as wallpaper, I still get the grey backround with the partial monotone AT&T globe in the Today screen. The older ROM allowed for customization even with TouchFLO was selected. Is it ROM or user error?
