Need to downgrade HTC Fuze from Windows 6.1 to Windows 6.0 PLEASE HELP
Apr 22 2009, 8:47 PM EDT | Post edited: Apr 22 2009, 8:48 PM EDT
I have an HTC Fuze (for ATT) and I absolutely HATE Windows Mobile 6.1. There are a number of reasons why I don't like it, but one of the top reasons is its text messaging. I really hate the conversation thing, and how messages aren't listed separately but rather all together, and how if you want to delete only ONE message (not every single one between you and someone else) you can't. Also, it doesn't list the date and the time like it does with Windows Mobile 6.0 (it's one or the other: same day it lists the time, and from the next day on it lists only the date). Anyway, I originally thought it was only like that on the FUZE but when I looked at the Samsung Epix, and another phone, they all have the same text layout with wm6.1. So all I want to do is downgrade the FUZE to Windows Mobile 6.0. I don't have a clue how to do it, and don't really understand all the technical language I've seen when attempting to look it up. If anyone can pleaseeeeeee help me, I would really appreciate it!

I've read some things about SIM and CID unlocking the phone, and something about ROM -- and I have no idea what any of it is, or what I need to do to my phone in order to get wm6.0.

The Fuze was released by AT&T with WM6.1. No WM6.0 ROM was ever developed by HTC for AT&T to release. If you really want to go back to 6.0 you would probably have to have a custom ROM "cooked" for the Fuze. It would be simpler to find an add-in program that will handle your text messages without threading. When I was using 6.0 on my Tilt, I installed a program the provided for threading, since I didn't like the way 6.0 handled text messaging. You need a program that does the opposite. Look at www.handango.com for a text msg. editor. It is much easier to load and use that than to change the Fuze to 6.0. It is also possible that you can turn off the text msg threading with a registry edit. I don't know that for sure, but I'll look into it. If I find something, I'll post it. Hey, thanks so much! I don't completely understand everything you said lol, but I'll definitely check that website out. There were other things about WM6.1 I didn't like though, and I'm so used to and love the tilt.; and since the tilt says it's "Windows Mobile 6 Professional" I was wondering if there was any way to get that on the Fuze. I don't really understand the term "cooked" or how to get a custom ROM though - or how to do a registry edit for that matter. I used to be pretty good with technology, but I never got that into it, and especially not with cell phones. If there's anyone you know who could physically help me out with that, or at least talk me through it I'd really appreciate it. And any other info you have on the text messaging program or anything would be great as well. Thanks again! Do you find this valuable?

I have never seen a 6.0 rom for the fuze. And locked or unlocked, you cannot use anything other than a fuze rom. If you tells us what it is about 6.1 that you don't like, perhaps we could suggest workarounds. I personally love 6.0 on my Tilt..

It sounds as though the biggest complaint is the threaded text msg in 6.1. I suggested an after market program to "un-thread" the texts. When I was running 6.0 on my Tilt I used an after market program to thread my text msg. There must be one to "un-thread" them. There may be a reg edit that turns threading on or off, but I don't know which reg key it would be. Do you find this valuable?

If that is the case, just download advance config. among other great registry tweaks, there is an option to disable threaded messaging.

Thanks !!! I had completly forgotten that AC3.3 had that option to disable email threading.

tru2thgme - I have some detailed posts on this site about downloading and installing AC3.3. Just remember you have to download Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 3.5 to allow Advanced Configuration Tool to work. Disabling email threading is very simple after you get AC3.3 loaded.

I just have one question about this. Do I download it straight onto the phone? and if so, is there a specific folder I should download it to, or create its own folder?

Since both files download as .CAB files, you download them to your PC (I store the files in a Desktop folder I call WM6.1 Files) with the Fuze connected via Active Sync., copy the files (using Explore in Active Sync) to the device. I copy them to the My Documents file on the device, but you can copy them to any location where you can find them using File Explorer on the device. Once the files are copied onto the device, disconnect the device from the PC, Use File Explorer to find the .CAB files in whatever folder you copied them and tap on them to execute them. Make sure you install .NET Compact Framework 3.5 before Advanced Configuration 3.3. I always do a soft reset after I execute each CAB file. It takes more time, but I find I have fewer problems. Each program will place an icon in your "Programs" folder on the device. Tap on the Icon for Advanced Config. expand the Messaging tab and disable the SMS Threading feature.

Or you can just download them straight to your phone. Find them with File Explorer, click to install, soft reset and follow Sqarrela's steps.

Direct download to the phone works fine too. I always download to my PC first so I can store the CAB files on the PC (with all the other WM files) so I can find them easily if I have to do a hard reset of the device and reload my favorite programs and patches.

As do I, but I always keep copies on my storage card also, in a folder called Apps to Load. And after I flash or Hard reset I either auto-load everything with Sashimi,

Or I just pick and chose what to reload by hand.

Thanks !!! I just looked at Sashimi and it looks like one of the most useful utilities I have seen. Any time I have done a Hard Reset or flashed a ROM on my Tilt, I have reloaded a list of software and patches by hand. Sashimi looks like it will solve that problem and make experimenting with different ROMs much easier.

Hey, your suggestions really helped a lot! i do have a few more questions though. I still haven't switched from my dying tilt to the fuze bc i still really hate the fuze. right now there are two issues that are preventing me from using the phone and i was wondering if anyone could help me with them.

the first one has to do with word completion. i have the settings set to suggest 4 words after typing one letter. on my tilt it does this. it lists things ive never heard of before, as well as things ive typed a lot. i really need this seeing as though i am not the best speller and it usually tells me the correct spelling. plus im not that patient when it comes to typing long things (which i do frequently). the fuze, even though it is set to the same settings as my tilt, does not suggest or correct anything!! ive tried everything and i just dont know what to do. i mean it doesnt even give me something like a dictionary where i could add my own words, which still isnt as good as coming with a complete set, but it would be something. does anyone know why it is not suggesting or correcting words, even when the settings say it should and are exactly the same settings on both phones?

the other issue is with voice command. i use my bluetooth A LOT, and im constantly hitting the button and then saying, "home" "mom" "sam", and with the fuze you have to say the complete name as entered in the contacts list. and u dont record your own voice to a contact you pick, u just have to say what the contact name or number is, which drives me completely CRAZY. i mean the way i name contacts is not something i can easily say like 30 times a day. instead of just saying "cvs norwalk" i would have to say "cvs - norwalk - wspt ave 24/7" is there any way to get around this? or to add a program where i can choose a contact and then record what i want to say in order for it to dial that number like it does with the tilt?

I understand your frustration with the Fuze. I still use my Tilt because the Fuze drives me crazy. My wife uses the Fuze, and with smaller hands the slide out keyboard works for her. I'm waiting for the Touch Pro 2 (AT&T Fortress). I hear it's comng out August 24 in the U.S. but I'll believe it when I see it. It's all over the world, but not here yet. I will look at my wife's Fuze and see what I can figure out about predictive text. Have you upgraded the Fuze with the new ROM? It corrected many of Bluetooth/Voice Command conflicts, but I don't know about predictive text.

Voice Command looks for contacts based on what it says in the "File As" line in the contacts file. In your example, you have "cvs norwalk" filed as "cvs - norwalk - wspt ave 24/7". You have to say "CALL cvs - norwalk - wspt ave 24/7". If you go into that contact and change the "File As" line to "cvs norwalk" or maybe just "cvs" it should save you a lot of dictation to get the call you want.

Check out the Microsoft tutorial and demo of Voice Command. It is very powerful, but it has a steeper learning curve than the old program that was in WM6.0 that you program with your own voice. At one time I had 6.0 running with both programs. I would use one hot key for one program and a different one for the other. It worked pretty well, but WM6.1 left out the old Voice Pad? (I can't remember what it was called) so I had to switch to VC full time. It was really frustrating when VC and the Bluetooth stack had conflicts on the Fuze, but they fixed that with the new ROM.

hey, i appreciate you looking into my issues. the problem with changing the "file as" name, is that i have contact info for a lot of cvs's (which i actually use all of them a lot) and there are multiple ones that i go to or call in the same town. also some are 24hrs and some aren't, so it really helps me to have it named how it is, so i can figure out which im trying to call at a glance. i just wish that the fuze had the same program the tilt does, where you select a contact and number and then record your voice to say what you want for that specific number. and that's all you have to say into the bluetooth to get it to dial that number. now you have to say the entire contact name, as well as which number it is (mobile, home, work, etc).

i did just update the rom now, so i haven't really tried it out yet, but according to the microsoft tutorial, nothing has changed. do you know if there's a voice speed dial program that i could download and add on to the fuze? it is listed as a program under tools on the tilt, so i thought maybe I could find something like it to add?

also, if you were able to find anything out about the predictive text, please let me know. that is a huge issue that's holding me back from using the fuze. thanks again for everything! your suggestions have been a huge help!

I forgot one thing. I really hate the layout of the phone on the fuze. the tilt has a lot more on the actual than the fuze. and while you can access most of the items through the menu on the fuze, i really liked them on the screen. things like the speed dial, call history, and the talk button. the other thing i didn't like about the fuze's phone is that when you start to dial a number it only lists 2 numbers, either from your contacts or call history, and the tilt shows 5. i know these are all stupid little things that I would most likely get used to in time, it's just that they do bother me, and i have used them so much on the tilt that i dont really want to give them up. i just don't get why they would remove all of these things; they're supposed to be upgrading the phone, not downgrading it. anyway, i was wondering if you knew if the spb mobile shell is able to change anything other than the home screen, like the phone? or if there are any other programs that are able to change the phone. i'm sorry for all of the questions, it's just that you seem to be a genius when it comes to this stuff -- you know like everything there is to know. either way, i really appreciate you being so patient and helpful.
