HTC Touch Dual - Intermittent 'SMS Received' Warning

Hi, I've had my Touch Dual for over a year now (on contract through Orange) and I've noticed recently that sometimes I don't get a notification of an SMS message being received. I'm using the HTC main screen layout and the SMS warning box shows '0'. When I open the messages function, then the phone beeps, vibrates and the message appears.

Is this an issue with the phone or a network issue?
