Deleted contacts howto recover
Mar 17 2009, 6:52 AM EDT | Post edited: Mar 17 2009, 6:52 AM EDT
Hi.

I read on this forum that if data is deleted it's not realy gone, it's just been removed from the systems index.
But the question is how to recover the contacts and what applications to use?

The phone in my case i belive is a HTC S730 and i think it's running Windows mobile 5 or 6.
I dont have to much information on the phone since it's a customers phone.

The thing happend this way, user was using a pc cable to sync with outlook, but then turned to activesync to sync over the mobile network, but when the settings were entered the user got the question that the contacts/calander and so on needed to be removed, he answered yes to this, and it deleted it all.
And the user had not dont a PC sync for ages since it stoped working and now he is in a bit of a pickle, he dont want to send the phone for data recovery to IBAS since that could end up costing him around 10.000SEK or more depending on the work they need to do.

So im asking you people here if you know a better way?
Or is this just something that he will have to live with?

God i hope someone has a good solution for this, must be a common thing now days.

I never heard of a recovery program for files from the phones internal memory. I do know there are programs to recover deleted pictures from compact flash cards. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

I believe the problem is with the active sync program and office 2004 and newer. I have come across this problem and found it to be some problem with active sync not reading the office install correctly. When it does that it disables the syncing for anything related to office. You can re-enable it under the advance sync option for the connection of the phone and select what you wish to sync and try again. If it does not work, remove the association with active sync from the pc/laptop and make a new profile for syncing and try again. Your contacts should not be deleted from the computer just the phone.

I'm not sure I understand the problem completely. He synced to Outlook on his PC with a cable for a while then he synced over the mobile network - does that also mean he was syncing to Outlook? If so, the contacts he synced to Outlook should still be on the PC. If the contacts on the PC and the HTC are both wiped out he can still recover the Outlook.pst file on the PC by finding it on the PC and then finding Outlook.bak which will be in the same system folder. That is the Outlook backup file that is automatically created by Outlook. If the contacts aren't on the PC, post back and I will give you the path to the backup file for Outlook and tell you how to unhide Systems Files so you can restore contacts, calendar, etc

Is there any chance you backed up the contacts to the storage card or SIM card on the phone? Or ever had a sync relationship with another PC? If so, they may be recoverable from the storage location. If not, they're gone.

I am not sure but maybe you should try any recovery tool, for example, Advanced File Recovery on http://www.advanced-file-recovery.com/ .
I was always satisfied with its work.

I have a SIM manager feature on my S743. My contacts are saved to the SIM card and to the phone as Outlook contacts. When I delete the contact, the number remains on the SIM card. Not sure if anyone else's is that way. Do you find this valuable?

You can set up the device that way. Normally, the SIM contact does not store as much information as the Outlook contact. You can specify what is stored on the SIM card, but it is usually Name, Phone number, sometimes address. It is somewhat of a backup if your Outlook contacts get wiped out and your PC bombs, but I still prefer to backup to my storage card with Sprite Backup. I keep 2 storage cards backed up one in the phone and one in safe storage.
