Predictive text won't turn off
Mar 11 2009, 9:51 PM EDT | Post edited: Mar 11 2009, 9:51 PM EDT
OK, I bought 2 HTC Touch Pro's. I gave my bro one and we've never been able to get the predictive text turned off when texting. I got it turned off on mine and then out of nowhere it came back on and won't shut off.

Any suggestions how to fix this before I toss the stupid thing out the window?

I went to Settings, Input, Word Completion and unchecked the box "Suggest words when entering text". Is there someplace else that has to be turned off?

It may be the T9 that you really want to turn off. You can do that in the input settings also. Or on you input method, if you choose the QWERTY or FULL QWERTY keyboard, there is a switch to turn the T9 ON/OFF Do you find this valuable?

OK, that helped, but didn't quite fix the whole problem. The black box still appears on the bottom of the screen and repeats everything I type, but turning off the T9 keeps it from trying to change my text to something else so at least I can type now without the stupid thing messing up my messages.

I think it's some kind of glitch because it wasn't doing that on my phone before, it just started up out of nowhere.

Thanks for your help!

Try advanced Config http://www.4shared.com/file/82034868/8bd01b62/Advanced_Configuration_Tool_v33.html

It has settings for suggested words, T9 and disable ClearType, along with many other useful tweaks for your phone.

I did this registry edit to my Touch Pro and it went away. Out of the box my TP was good but after doing a hard reset the T9 black box showed up but this took care of it.

hklm/software/tegic/et9/ime/textinputmode=0

Otherwise I found this edit but I haven't tried it.

HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Layouts\e001 0409

ime file = "compime.dll"
layouttext = "COMP IME"

Original values:
ime file = "\windows\et9ime.dll"
layouttext = "eT9 IME"

Apps like Advance Config , Diamond Tweaks, Kaiser tweaks do the registry editing for you. Mucking around in your registry can really screw up your phone big time if you don't know what you are doing.

Reg Edit and Total Commander are the two that I use, remember to always make a copy of the strings that you are going to edit first, that way if your experimentation screws them up you can always reload the copies to get your phone back working.

And like most other mods, I should add, registry changes void your warranty. So keep the copies and what change you did, so you can put your phone back to original for a warranty problem.

I had the same problem and tried several things to correct the problem. I ended up calling HTC support and they talked
me through it very nice folks. Seems like they have had a problem with the auto text not coming on they reversed the special instructions for turning it on and mine turned off. Hope it helps.

I use Total Commander to do registry edits.

My GPS works on mine which is on Alltel, GPS can be disabled by your carrier, so you might have to do some reprogramming to get it to work.

Hi, just want to say thanks... had the same problem on my touch pro. I found my values were already "hklm/software/tegic/et9/ime/textinputmode=0" so tried your second tweak and it works perfectly. The only problem I now have is that the symbol key does not work but that doesn't bother me at all.

Actually, the solution is very simple. When you are typing using the soft keyboard (on-screen) there is a button near the lower left which says

XT9
ABC

If you have XT9 highlighted, just press it to switch to ABC. When it's on ABC the predictive text went away for me.

I also have the following setting:

Start - Settings - All settings - Personal (Tab) - Input - "Touch Input" (selected) - Options - XT9 settings - [All boxes unchecked]

Hope this helps. :)

This happened to me on my HTC Touch Pro... I was able to cure by turning it "on" again and then turning it off. It seems that it didn't recognize my turning it off. I couldn't type with it "on", I was miserable for a few hours until I figured out this solution! Do you find this valuable?
