Has my HTC Touch kicked the bucket? (talk/end buttons no longer work)
Mar 5 2009, 4:06 PM EST
Until today (and about 20 minutes ago), my HTC Touch Elf was working perfectly. I had taken a dozen calls but on the last call, I noticed I suddenly could not hang up the call. The end button no longer seemed to function. Inexplicably, the camera came on and could not be cancelled (by way of the end button). Then I noticed the talk button no longer worked. At this point, I decided to power off the phone. Now, when I start up the phone, I immediately see the message - "This operation will delete all your personal data, and reset all settings to manufacturer default. Press Action to restore manufacturer default, or press other keys to cancel." By getting this screen, it appears that both the talk and end buttons are depressed and this is triggering the HARD RESET. And no other key cancels this screen. I also tried a soft reset but that had no affect. The phone displays this message every time now. Any suggestions (other than replacing the phone)? 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

It could just be that grime is making the keys sticky. Take a can of compressed air, for cleaning PC keyboards and see if you can't gently blow them out. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Take a can of compressed air, for cleaning PC keyboards and see if you can't gently blow them out. "Hello and thanks for your reply. I should have mentioned that no key press gets beyond this screen...meaning, I can nigher cancel the hard reset or engage it. Because I take very good care of this phone and because there were no hints of a problem prior to the failure, I doubt it is a 'grime' issue. Nevertheless, I did give it a good spray (compressed air), a lot of taps and knocks, etc... nothing helped. I have a feeling this may be a circuit failure. Has anyone else encountered a similar problem? Do you find this valuable? |

Then it has to repaired, its either a bad keyboard or a software problem that can't be corrected since you can't do the hard reset.

"Then it has to repaired, its either a bad keyboard or a software problem that can't be corrected since you can't do the hard reset."I am quite certain that repair would be more expensive than replacing the phone. Now, the question is... what do I replace it with? The HTC Touch Diamond doesn't allow memory upgrades (I have two essential tools on my Touch: TomTom and a custom database - which together use up to 5GB). The HTC HD is too expensive. What else? Perhaps a different brand of PDA phone? My selections are quite limited with Rogers Canada. Do you find this valuable? |

"Do they have the Touch Pro?"No Touch Pro. Rogers Canada is usually about 1 year or more behind in cell phone technology. Worse, they NEVER release firmware updates on any phone. I'd love to dump them but I am in a strangle-hold of a contract for another year. Anyhow, I am actually considering the Nokia N95 8GB. Which would mean re-writing my database for Symbian OS. Not even sure what I need to do at this point. Do you find this valuable? |

Here, pop onto ebay, and search for HTC TOUCH P3450 CASING WITH KEYBOARD.Its usually 15 dollars in total (inc shipping). Its not difficult to replace everything. Look for a guide on youtube. A fifteen year old such as myself replaced the entire casing, wi-fi adapater, AND LCD screen because i dropped my phone in water, and trying to save it hit it against a rock. It functions perfectly fine now. Do you find this valuable? |

"Here, pop onto ebay, and search for HTC TOUCH P3450 CASING WITH KEYBOARD.Actually, about a month ago I was able to power up my HTC touch again and it worked!! I used it for about 1 month before deciding to permanently retire it, in favor of the Android (HTC Magic). Wow, the Android (Roger's Magic version) has a lot of improvement necessary before it can function as a phone with all the features I had on my Touch phone. Although the 3G network is very nice to have and the browser is better than Opera (in some cases). I have a nearly perfect HTC Touch, ready to sell with tons of accessories now (and purchased add-ons). Do you find this valuable? |

Hmmm. Suddenly and suddenly---that's weird. Do you have insurance or is it still under warranty? If so bring it into a Sprint repair store---call sprint for your nearest one---and have them check it out. My Touch Pro suddenly went weird too and I had it replaced.

But more importantly, I have now retired the phone and replaced it with a HTC Magic. Do you find this valuable? |
