Touch HD internet problem & g-sensor issue...
Feb 23 2009, 6:22 AM EST | Post edited: Feb 23 2009, 6:22 AM EST
Hi, new member here. My name is Dave.

I've bought myself a Touch HD after a while whithout a PDA (I had the 1st model XDA), & apart from 2 disappointments I like the PPCphone. But if I can't solve these 2 problems then it really is an expensive paperweight to me.

First problem is the mobile internet. I've had the phone 3 weeks & at first the internet was ok. 3 days ago the internet stopped working for half a day (last Friday morning), then it started working again for half a day (Friday afternoon), then stopped working. Whenever I try to use a program that needs internet access (or when I try to turn data connection on in comm manager) it displays a message saying "Cannot Connect ... Dialed: telstra.internet ... Cannot connect for an unknown reason. To check your connection settings ... etc."

I've contacted Telstra & they've thoroughly checked my account for any issues. Today I went into the Telstra shop & put my sim card into a WinMo5 PDA loan phone & the internet connection worked. So that points the spotlight at the HD. Any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? No settings were changed when it stopped working. Have I got a lemon phone?

The second problem is the g-sensor doesn't work on any other program except youtube & opera. I thought this to be normal until somebody told me on the train that on their HD the g-sensor also rotates IE & most other programs. Is this true? If so, how do I get the g-sensor to work with all programs. In the g-sensor calibration utility it works fine.

My info:
ROM Version = 1.14.479.3 (25874) WWE
ROM Date = 11/12/08
Radio Version = 1.09.25.14
Protocol Version = 52.49a.25.26U
WinMo6.1 Pro CE OS 5.2.20757 (build 20757.1.4.0)

Thanks in advance, any info much appreciated. I'd love to be able to solve these issues (especially the internet issue).

Dave.

Well, to update this, the internet started working again yesterday morning. I was fiddling with the settings like I've done a number of times since it stopped, then it just started working. Hmmmm.

As an observation, it seemed to be in HSDPA mode that the internet had it issues. Both times it started working again when it changed from the H icon to either E for edge (1st time) or G for gprs (yesterday). Either HSDPA ties itself up in a knot & the change seems to untie it, or it's just that Telstra here mostly has HSPDA networks so it's coincidence that is when it starts working again.

I will keep my eye on it & update. Does anybody know of a good mobile internet diagnostic software tool I can look into? If not, then if I develop these probs again, I might try to write one myself.

Hello, this has happened to me. I'm currently desperate as I can't get it to get connected. I have tried everything, I have even reset the phone to its default configuration state and I have had no luck at all.

I have tried changing the HDSPA settings to all 3 states: Disable, HDSAP Only and HDSPA/HSUPA (which by the way I don't know what they are).

I used to have connection since 2 months ago until now (I currently live in Uruguay and have connection through Movistar). They have checked my account infinite times and they always said the account is fine.

Please help me if you can, what else did you do????

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Dave,

We get questions about this all the time from U.S. users of the HD. The HD was not set up to work on U.S. 3G. Even though it is a quad band phone (for phone, Edge and GPRS) it only looks for 3G on 900MHz and 2100MHz. In the U.S. 3G is at 850/1900MHz, so HD phones will not get 3G. Since Australia is generally 900/2100 for 3G it should work for you if the settings in the phone are correct. You can check out the frequency data at this website:

http://www.gsmarena.com/network-bands.php3?sCountry=UNITED+STATES

When you arrive at the site, you will see a drop down box that you can change to any country you wish. It will tell you the frequency requirements per country.

When I'm having 3G issues, I use my 10 Button Comm Manager and disable 3G, then re-enable it. That generally solves the problem. If you would like to try the Comm Manager with the 3G on/off toggle, post back and I will post the URL.

Can you access data via Edge and GPRS? If 'E' and 'G' both work and 3G doesn't you may have the frequency issues I detailed in #3 above. Have you just moved to Uruguay? If so, where were you previously? Uruguay typically has high speed data on 850 and 2100MHz, but I don't know which frequency each carrier uses. If your carrier uses 850 but not 2100, your HD won't pick it up since it doesn't pick upp at 850MHz - only 900/2100.

I moved to Uruguay 1 year ago, but I purchased and used this phone HERE in Uruguay since 2 months ago with no problems (except that I had to use Edge and/or GPRS instead of 3G, but I didn't care too much about it).

The problem is the phone just stopped working even in Edge or GPRS, it doesn't connect at all anymore without any explanation.

Have you changed any of the settings on the phone? If not, have you discussed this with your carrier to see if they have changed anything about their data system. If you can't find solutions in either of the above questions, I would try a soft reset and if that doesn't help, backup all your data and do a hard reset followed by a data restore. The ROM refresh from a hard reset may get you back connected. If it doesn't, I would start looking at the possibility of a hardware problem. Will your carrier replace the phone under warrantee?

Well, my carrier insists they didn't change anything. Today I requested a SIM replacemente, that didn't fix it, also, I tested my wife's SIM and it didn't work either. Everything indicated this is a hardware problem, which of course turns to be that I have purchased a beautiful "black brick" in $700 because I purchased it through Amazon and I live outside US in a country where HTC do not have representation.

Seems like a waste of money to me.
