Selecting multiple text messages (SMS) WM6 P3300

Sometimes tapping on my list of text messages will select multiple messages, rather than opening the one that I have tapped on. If multiple messages are selected, it always opens the top one rather than the one that I click on. Any idea how to turn this mode off?
