HTC Fuze Internet fails 6-12 hours after soft reset
Dec 30 2008, 11:44 AM EST | Post edited: Dec 30 2008, 11:44 AM EST
I have a new HTC fuze with an AT&T Unlimited Internet account and the following happens:

1. Internet works (Opera, IE, Gmail, Google Maps, etc.) fine after a soft reset or new phone setup
2. Within 6-12 hours, all internet connection dependent apps fail with errors:
- OPERA: Red ERROR! message: The remote server refuses to perform the request. It then states that the site is unavailable and to make sure your internet connection is active and check other apps
- IE: Error 406 unavailable
- Gmail (Java app): Cannot contact server
- Google maps: (does not receive data)
3. Note that email, text and phone continue to work

If I do a soft reboot, things work fine for another 6-12 hours, and then the same failure occurs

Here are things that I have tried (called into AT&T and HTC support)
1. Full Hard reset
2. Go through connection settings (AT&T said to remove username/pwd and reboot, when this was done, a different error message occurred, saying no connection to wap.cingular was available). When the username/pwd was restored, things worked for 8-12 hours.
3. Replace phone (new one did exactly the same thing out of the box)
4. Call HTC Support, who had never heard of the issue, but are trying to recreate it.

Any ideas? Help?

Thanks!

Sounds like your data connection is timing out at the network level.

If your device is in idle and reaches the idle threshold set on the network, it tears down your PDP session and gives the IP you were using to someone else. Sometimes, the device doesn’t "realize" this and when you try to use data again, it tries to use the last IP address is was assigned. This of course wont work since it has been released for another user to access.

AT&T can run a trace to confirm that this is or is not what is happening to you; HTC cant as they don’t have access to the AT&T Network or their tools.

Another thing to consider is that this could be an issue with your SIM since you swapped the device and have the same issue.

What some users have done (this was seen with other devices as well) is to manually end the data session when the issue occurs and re-initiate it. This at least prevents you from having to so a soft reset and waiting for your device to boot. for the Fuze, as a default, if you press and hold your End Call button, this ends your data sessions. This is of course if you have not reassigned this function by going to Start>Settings>System tab>Long Press End key.

I will try the end all sessions. I wonder why this did not occur with my 8525 or 8125, I suppose the software is handling things different with the Fuze. Also, with the new phone they sent, I did get a new SIM, and it still occurred, so I doubt it is a SIM issue.

I have closed the Opera browser and restarted it in the past and the problem still occurred, but it is possible that other sessions were still being held open.

I have to wait for the problem to occur again in the next few hours and will try it out.

Thanks for a great resoponse!

I will also see if AT&T can do the trace. Th

I have had the same thing happen to my Fuze as well. What I have noticed is that if I get the IE and Opera errors whenever my data connection is turned on. After turning off the data connection, everything works fine and I can access the internet just fine. I go to the settings icon on the touch flo menu, select communications and then turn off the data connection.

If you have email accounts set up to automatically download email messages, they utilize the data connection but the internet doesn't. I have no clue why this happens or if this is the actual cause but it has always worked for me.

I have been doing some research, and have found something interesting. I did a hard reset, and things were working for much longer, then I realized that this time, network policies were not being enforced by the exchange server. When I allowed network policies to apply (through connection to the server), it appears the issue is back.

I am trying to find out if it is really a network policy issue. The policy is only supposed to require a password to be set, but it does not do that.

Could a network policy cause the issue mentioned by browntannis?

After many visits with AT&T, they were convinced that another app is taking over the internet connection on my phone, and had me turn off video sharing on the phone (which was on, despite the fact that I don't use it). The end connections button (hangup push 3sec) does do the reset. Also this same sim card in an HTC Hermes (8525), never had this problem.

I will see what happens

Not sure if link is allowed, so I will quote:
If you launch Opera and go to opera:config it brings up the configuation similar to firefox.

Find the "proxy" section and remove the HTTP and HTTPS entries that point to some cingular hostname.

Save the config.

Exit Opera and restart it.

All is good and no proxy anymore!!!

-e

But still check out xda-developers, and be careful. Some of the stuff they do over there really requires expertise!!!!

Nice thought, but it is not the same issue they discussed there. Besides IE fails as does other apps that use the internet.

I did try the suggestion, but no entries were in the proxy section anyway.

Thanks for the thought!

Well, the battle continues. Here is what I have tried:

1. Hard reset, do not connect to MS Exchange server, lasted 1 week with no issue
2. Connect to MS Exchnage server, installs a policy, but turn off MS Push, still had problem
3. Turn off data and MS push, still had problem
4. The connection reset (push hangup for 3 sec), always fixes the problem
5. AT&T could not confirm any ip address problem
6. Company policy applied during MS Exchange is meant to only enforce requiring a password on the phone, but it does not appear to work
7. The loss affects all browsers, or items such as Google Maps which use an IP connection. It does not affect mail or texting

Ideas where to go next?

Come to the dark side- we have cookies! I had this problem for a while, spent ages with AT&T support, and eventually stumbled across xda-devs and learned to flash custom ROMs onto my fuze. These guys are friggin amazing, it's like a whole new phone!

MY SOLUTION - I have had the same problem. Tried just about everything including completely clearing the memory and starting from scratch. Was on the phone for several hours with AT&T without lasting success. But then I started fiddling around with settings and found this easy fix which worked:

Settings --> Connections Tab --> Click on "Advanced Network"
Switch from CHAP authentication to PAP authentication.

The moment I made this change my data connection came back. Now it works fine with no interruptions. Don't ask me why - I just know it works. Wish I'd found this days ago.

had a similar problem. could only connect via phone, not wifi. fix was to go to programs>tools>proxy manager>disable proxy. it is best to disable each time you want to access the internet. Do you find this valuable?

Is your Fuze new enough that it has the updated ROM installed? If not, search this Wiki (or the HTC site) for the new updated ROM that was released a few weeks ago. The new ROM solved a number of annoying bugs, it may help with this one. If you already have the updated ROM and are still having the problem, you might consider a custom ROM from xda-developers. Just remember that a custom ROM voids your warrantee with AT&T. Most xda ROMS are faster and more efficient than the AT&T ROMs, since they don't have all the AT&T "bloatware".
