Help - wifi not working

I just got a used htc p4000 and thought I'd try out the wifi on my wireless internet at home before getting any kind of contract with Telus (don't even have a monthly calling plan yet ... and not planning to get data). It's showing that it's connected to my wireless, but when I try to open any web pages on IE it says the page isn't available. So I can't get onto the internet at all. Telus says wifi won't work if I don't have the phone registered with them -- and they advised me to get a calling plan. This doesn't make sense to me ... a friend bought a used samsung with wifi and just uses the wifi to get internet on his phone around the house ... doesn't use it for calling. I'm not convinced that the wifi will start working after I get a calling plan set up with Telus. Anyone know how to fix this? Do you find this valuable?

Should work as I used mine in Europe where there is no phone service. Try Settings - connection tab - Connections - Advanced tab - Select Networks - Then select either My Work Network or My ISP depending on how you connected to wireless. This should force phone to connect via wifi. I assume you connected to wireless okay. Do you find this valuable?
