I also don't have Media plan and didn't like the fact the phone was constantly opening 3G.
I fixed it by changing the network options.

Works like a charm - no program can connect by itself, but only when I manually connect 3G or Active Sync or wifi.

Go to Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -> Select Networks
Change the first selection "... auto... connect to Internet..." to "My ISP"
Click Edit to make sure that "My ISP" is empty - this will prevent from dialing or connecting 3G

If any program tries to connect it will either fail silently, or it will present itself so you can recognize it and connect wifi if needed (or cancel browser for example)... Do you find this valuable?

I'm having the same problem. I currently have the data plan, but I'm going to cancel it because of poor reception. I use wifi and if the phone is in an area where it can't see the wifi, it reverts to MEdia.net! Even though I have turned off the data connection. This is frustrating and scary due to data charges. About the ActiveSync, my Fuze keeps opening up this app. It's constantly in the Task Mgr, even though I close it every time I see it open. I don't have email set to automatically load, nor do I have the Weather to auto load. Does the ActiveSync drain the battery?"
I have AT&T and found $52.00 worth of Data charged to my account in 24 hours of opening it. I called them and told them to close the data link. After they closed the data link Wifi was only working to two applications utube and Skype. solution was to reinstall the operating system. Now every thing is working with out AT&T Data link. Google with GPS work screamly well with at&T data link. Now I just have to pre map my trip so the phone stores the maps and it still works fine with some data whitepage pop ups just l close them and map your your location comes back in to veiw. also wifi the datas for the built in gps program and your good to go. Do you find this valuable?

Please post the fix if any one had figured out how to stop Active sync from starting automaticall.... everytime...
