40. RE: where to download QuickGPS?

Well, I would have to fault HTC 100%. They give the carrier the option to have custom build, as well as to "opt out" of any updates. Why in the world would a carrier turn that down? They sure aren't working in the client's best interest. Pathetic indeed.

Carriers like Telus remove quick gps so you have to use there software (Telus Navigator) and carriers like Telus charge money to use there software, so yeah its a big scam to get money out of you.

True, but it is HTC that signs their programs with certs to prevent it running on an "unapproved" carrier. Also, instead of popping in and out of the forums with possible places to snag a pirate copy of QuickGPS, can't someone from HTC just make it available, or at the very least sell us the freaking software? I will pay for it to have a functioning GPS. It is frustrating dealing with HTC because they just finger point to the carrier, when it is the way the build their QuickGPS software product to check if it is authorized to run on that device/carrier. My impression of HTC went from them begin stellar, to just another piece of the scam, in a just a week. HTC tech support is of no help either and just directs you to the boards to find a pirate solution. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"True, but it is HTC that signs their programs with certs to prevent it running on an "unapproved" carrier.Unfortunately, HTC sells most of their devices to the carriers who in turn sell them to consumers. Remember HTC is responding to the mandates of their customers - the carriers. The consumer has only one choice - that of picking the carrier that is least objectionable. Eventually, with competition and pressure, the carriers will all bend to a program like Metro PCS where for $35 a month you have unlimited everything - talk, text, data, etc. But that will be a while. When companies like Verizon and Telus pull the crap they are pulling with GPS, a boycott of their services is the only thing that will get their attention. Verizon tried locking out WiFi a few years ago to force their customers to pay for data service. There was such an outcry that they reversed their position and revised their ROM to let WiFi work on devices that had that ability. GPS is the same situation. Beat the drum and raise hell with these carriers ... it's the only thing they understand. Do you find this valuable? |

And here I thought I was just buying a phone; I don't want to start a revolution.WAY too much of a headach. I detest Apple, but hey, at least with iPhone you know what you are paying for. Bad business model for HTC: The good old "bait and switch." Do you find this valuable? |

"And here I thought I was just buying a phone; I don't want to start a revolution. The principal advantage of switching to iPhone is you get AT&T by default. Apple has a real sweetheart deal with AT&T - you have to buy a data plan whether you use it or not. You would be better off keeping your HTC device, unlocking it and switching to AT&T. You get the benefit of an HTC phone, which blows the iPhone out of the water on performance and you don't have to deal with a carrier that locks you out of 3rd party GPS software. AT&T is far from perfect, but I find them superior to Verizon and Telus (from the horror stories I've heard about both of them on this Wiki). If you live in a cold climate the iPhone 3G S has one real benefit... the battery problems are so severe that you can use it for a hand warmer on cold days ! I prefer keeping my HTC and buying a hand warmer when I need one. lol Do you find this valuable? |

Ah, whatever. No desire to use iPhone ever. Just that you get the phone as is was designed, good or not. When you buy a phone here, Canada, you need a 3 year contract to get a decent price on it. So, switching is not so easy. Unlocking a CDMA/GSM World phone TP2 is apparently not available yet. With HTC giving unlocking as the only option, they are really getting everyone to void their warranties. Also, switching carriers won't help with the QuickGPS issue. Only a ROM with it, or that allows it to be installed will help. GPS does work with Telus + Bing / Google, but not as fast as it would with QuickGPS. I guess the bigger problem is HTC blocks you from installing their firmware updates when you have Telus. (Unlocked would probably, if possible with CDMA world version, get around that.) FYI: AT&T and Verizon is not available where Teuls is. In Canada, you have Telus, Bell, or Rogers. Anyway, I am done thinking and worrying about this and am off the boards. It has been informative: HTC phone != HTC phone from carrier. Thanks for your replies. Do you find this valuable? |
