Browser settings for 3G and wifi?
Jul 6 2008, 2:37 AM EDT This may be a Windows Mobile general question. Here's what I noticed: whenever I am browsing the web (full desktop mode), the way websites download will change depending on what connection I have. If I am browsing on 3G (HSDPA) the images and webpages in general will download with low resolutions; but when I am browsing using WiFi they download in "full glory", i.e. photos are not blocky and they look very nice. So this leads me to believe there's a setting somewhere where you can select what type of resolutions or bandwidths to have depending upon your type of connection. I have poked around and I cannot find a toggle/switch or option anywhere to change it. How could I set it such that either I always download images at full res even if I am on 3G, or viceversa? Just curious. Do you find this valuable? |

I am not aware of a setting that affects the quality of the download. Do you find this valuable? |

Jul 6 2008, 4:08 PM EDT The only browser setting which could affect the resolution of content rendering would be the User Agent string, To be specific, UA-pixels & UA-color which are used as : UA-pixels: {for example, 240x320} UA-color: {mono2 | mono4 | color8 | color16 | color24 | color32} As per WindowsMobile Team Blog [http://blogs.msdn.com/iemobile/]: "In our latest update, UA-pixels, which has the screen size, will also change with portrait or landscape rotation, and, on HiDPI devices, which are capable of changing to high or low resolution, if the user changes the device screen size, the UA-Pixels header will reflect the change, as well." But i doubt if this is being changed based on the connection used. Cheers - Prakash Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Browser settings for 3G and wifi?
Jul 6 2008, 6:40 PM EDT I know it's hard to believe but indeed does happen. I invite anyone to try the following and see what I am talking about: - Connect to the web through 3G. - Open IE, in desktop mode. Go to a website that has pictures in it. For example http://www.lolcats.com/view/845 (what can I say, I like cats) - Check the quality of it, and the size. Notice how blocky it is, around the text and in the contrast area between the orange cat and the white snow. Check also the banner quality. The banner image will actually appear still. - Clear your cache... this is important as we are going to see the same picture and we want the browser to re-download it again. - Now, close the browser, switch to WiFi and re-open IE. Go back to the same site and re-open the picture you just saw. Tell me if te images are not of different quality. You will actually see the banner is indeed a moving GIF (the cat's head goes up and down). The orange cat image will now be much bigger and the quality will be significantly better than before. So what do you guys think? I have actually noticed the same trend in my laptop, when I browse the web using my 3G card and when I use WiFi. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Browser settings for 3G and wifi?
Wednesday, 11:15 AM EDT I am looking for this answer too. I presume that it is to do with the 3G Network operator. I imagine that they re-compress all images at lower quality before they 'pass them on' to you to reduce the amount of data they have to send. Probably cheaper for them than having extra bandwith capacity. Sound reasonable? Do you find this valuable? |
