Can I use this as a PDA with WiFi, but not through a cell carrier?

This may sound stupid, but I'm considering buying a Palm TX which is just a PDA, not a smartphone. I do not want a smartphone, because I prefer to have my phone and PDA seperate. My mother has an 8525 and is getting a new phone so she offered me hers to use instead of shelling out the cash for a TX. I'm just not sure how these devices work. If I do not sign up with a cell carrier would I be able to use it as just a PDA and get on the internet at WiFi Hotspots since it is WiFi capable or would I have to have a data plan through a carrier? Any help would be great since I am basically ignorant of how these things work. Thanks!! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

At this very moment, I am setting up an 8525 without a SIM installed on the household wifi an AT&T supplied 2wire ADSL portal. I had lunch today at a Mexican joint in the Big mall and the 8525 jacked right into their customer courtesy hotspot without a hickup. It was in my pocket and started screaming that I was wanted on MSN messenger.

Off hand, I would suggest get activesync4.5 (winxp) and jack your sim card into it. Once you sync it to Outlook you will probably throw rocks at your old phone. All the crap in one belt clip including emergency movie camera captures, GPS, Calendrical reminders, Messenger, text message notes. Only one crappy little box to keep charged up.
