How to disassemble Shadow/Juno? I want to install a LCD screen.
Mar 21 2008, 8:41 PM EDT
My LCD screen cracked about 3 weeks ago due to slight pressure on it. Nonetheless it was my fault. I found an LCD screen online for 60 bucks (compared to HTC's estimate of $120 to fix it) but Im not sure how to install the new screen. How do I take apart / disassemble the HTC Juno / Tmobile Shadow???Do you recommend I just send it in to HTC and pay the extra money to get it fixed, or try myself for half price. BTW... here's the site with the LCD for sale: http://cnn.cn/shop/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=shadow Thanks in advance. 8 out of 11 found this valuable. Do you? |

I've not come across any step by step disassembly yet,but there is the FCC page if you want to look at the internal photo .pdf's (3 of them). that might at least give you clues about disassembly https://fjallfoss.fcc.gov/oetcf/eas/reports/ViewExhibitReport.cfm?mode=Exhibits&RequestTimeout=500&calledFromFrame=N&application_id=642207&fcc_id=%27NM8PB%27 8 out of 11 found this valuable. Ok so my shadow's screen busted while it was in my pocket somehow about three weeks ago. Today I bought another broken shadow on craigslist for 40$ with an intact screen. Only the slider is broken on that phone. I plan on replacing the LCD as soon as possible. I can not figure out how to dissasemble the slider at all, not even with the FCC internal photos. If I can get it apart, I will post a step-by-step replacement. any help???

I just completed replacing my screen myself. Disassembly is a little bit tricky, and requires the right tools. I needed a #00 / #000 Philips screwdriver (tiny), a T4/T5 torx (tiny again), tweezers and a small flat blade. Step1. Remove battery cover, battery and SIM card Step2. Peel off Void sticker on right side of the battery compartment top. This exposes the first philips screw than nees to come out. It hold the back cover in place. Step3. Use the flat blade to gently pry off the back cover. Be careful around the USB charger port. I started on the opposite side, then the USB side and the cover seemed to lift off nicely. Step4. The button ribbon cables should be removed next. There is one cable on each side of the PCBA. Lift the black tab with the blade or tweezers and gently slide the cable out of the connector. I suggest using tweezers for this. Step5. Remove the 5 philips screws holding the PCBA and antenna in place. Step6. Remove the antenna. It seemed to come off very easily by lifting the bottom edge and pushing it up. Step7. Remove the PCBA. There are two fine pitch connectors under the PCBA. The screen /button connector is along the bottom of the PCBA and the keypad connector is on the lower right. The PCBA was very tight to get out around the vibrator and the upper left corner. Step8. You can now see the sliding mechanism. Remove the four philps screws that hold the slider. The phone will now be in two pieces. Be extremely careful with the cable between the two sections. Step9. Remove the four torx screws and gently pry apart the LCD module halves. The two pieces are pretty tightly joined. Step10. Remove the two philips screws at the top of the module, holding the speaker flex cable in place. Be gentle with the flex circuit. Step11. Disconnect the flex circuit on the bottom right side of the LCD. The connector has a black latch. Step12. The LCD is attached to the top by a couple of clips. 47 out of 48 found this valuable. Step13. Once you've got the panel out, it is easier to put the flex connector in and then place the panel in the clips. You should now start reversing the steps from Step 10. The screws on the Shadow/Juno are all very small, especially the ones securing the two halves. I've seen one issue with my replacement, which is the screen get crazy when opening / closing the phone (during the slide). Otherwise the replacement is working great. If you want a guide with pics, let me know. Now that I've done this once, a second time wouldn't take me too long. All told, it took me about 30-40 minutes to disassemble and re-assemble the phone. 17 out of 17 found this valuable. Do you? |

My daughter's Shadow screen went blank... but the backlight was still working. When she gave it to me to look at, I noticed the sliding mechanism felt loose and I could hear something within. Following the above instructions (thank you by the way - they are great), I was able to take apart the phone. What I found was that two of the four screws that hold the sliding mechanism had worked loose and that the spring had broken in the middle. The loose spring then tore away at the ribbon cable that connected the main PCB to the screen. So, what I need now is a replacement spring and a new ribbon cable. Does anyone know where I could get these? I am hoping that I do not need to purchase a whole sliding mechanism and screen but if I do, than I guess I will do that. Any insight appreciated.

Thank you so much, with your directions I was easily able to replace my lcd screen saving over 100 bucks !! The most difficult part was prying apart the lcd module halves other than that pretty simple.

thanks for the play-by-play, VERY useful information, does anyone else have problems with the selection wheel in the center. my screen acts like it is stuck in the up selection and keeps blinking and beeping. May have got some moisture around that area. Would it help to disassemble and let air out for a couple of days and then reassemble? Any help would be appreciated. jer.guzman@gmail.com

"yea does anyone have any pics. i can't pop open the cover."To open the cover you have to unscrew the screw below the battery that is covered by the "do not remove this or you void the warranty" type of thing. Once you do that, take a tiny phillips and simply pry the cover off of the back. It takes a bit of effort. Do you find this valuable? |

the prying part is the problem. it's easy to pry off the usb side but not the other side. I'm afraid i might break it.

First off thanks for the amazing instructions on how to take this phone apart, I managed to replace my cracked faceplate using the tutorial above. But after reassembling my phone, my volume buttons on the side stopped working. I tried reconnecting the tiny flex cable many times and still can't get them to work. Does anybody know where I can get a replacement volume button flex? If so please email me at pggingo@hotmail.com

"hey i need help on #9 it won't come apart can u help me"It def. is not easy to pry the two pieces apart .. . make sure you have gone through and removed all the torx screws you can see. It takes a consider amount of force. I had to take one of the small flat head drivers and pry it apart on one side and work the screwdriver down. This is difficult because you need to be careful and strong at the same time. Do you find this valuable? |
