I wiped out my ROM when I flashed my phone. I had already sync'd with MS Office Outlook
I had an extra copy of my contact photos and ring tone just in case. Ring tones and picture were on the storage card MS Outlook restored all my contacts, with photos and their assigned ring tones.

For all the horror stories we hear about lost contacts and other data, it sure is nice to hear a success story. In addition to syncing with Outlook every day, I do a Sprite Backup of my entire device to my storage card about once per week. I also have an extra storage card with a full backup "stashed" in my office. I backup to that at least once per month and always before I travel. My staff does the same thing.

One of my employees had his briefcase stolen in an airport. It had his laptop PC and his HTC Fuse in it. He would have lost everything including contacts, calendar etc, but he had a backup storage card at the office. He got a new laptop, new cellphone, put the storage card in the cellphone, did a Sprite Restore, then synced to Outlook and had all his contacts, calendar, etc back into Outlook in less than an hour. My firm is a consulting engineering firm that keeps all our client billing records and field notes on our PPCs. If we lose data we lose our billing records, field notes, etc. - a business disaster, not to mention a real pain in the neck.

I run my life and business with Outlook, so it's really important to have that info backed up in the event of a crash or theft.

When you try to save the contacts from the phone, where are you trying to save them to? Are you doing a sync to Outlook on your PC (if so are you using ActiveSync (XP) or WDCM (Vista), or are you trying to save the contacts to the storage card, SIM card, etc? We need more information to try and help.

"To store the contacts on the storage card you have to go to file explorer (which is in Start, then Programs)
-in the upper right hand corner you'll see "Show". Click on "My Device"
-navigate down to "pim" file, then (on the lower right) click "menu", "edit" then "copy.
-go back up to "Show" and click on "Storage Card"
-then you can simply paste the "pim" into your storage card. So whenever you add more contacts you'll have to repeat all of this to keep the most recent file in storage.

If you end up losing all of your data, or having to reset your device back to it's factory settings you can simply copy the "pim" from your storage card and paste it back onto your device. You will have to rename the "pim" that's in "My Device" (to anything) so that it will accept the "pim" that you are moving in to the folder.
I found this on another forum.. hope this help....

After you've done all of this, you have to turn your phone off. When it comes back on your contacts are restored...good luck!

Hi - I have been reading your contributions for saving contacts, thanks a lot.
Got another question: I found the PIM file in my "new" HTC (Trinity) that runs WM5, but I wasn't able to find the PIM file in my old HTC Magician, that runs WM3. Any ideas?
Thanks, Ari

Hi Ari. Great to hear from you. I hope you are doing well.

I'm not experienced with WM3. My first WM device was the HTC 8125 running WM5, but one possible help ... are you able to sync your Magician to a PC? If you are syncing to a PC, the PIM file is stored in Outlook (on the PC) and will sync to your Trinity using ActiveSync thru WM5. Just be careful when you set up the new sync relationship between the PC and the Trinity and do the initial sync with "PC overwrites Handheld" selected. If you set it up the other way "Handheld overwrites PC", it will take the blank PIM on the Trinity and wipe out your contacts and data on the PC.

FYI the PIM file on your PC is called OUTLOOK.PST I suggest you copy OUTLOOK.PST to another filename like OUTLOOK.BKP so if a disaster occurs, you can rename OUTLOOK.BKP to OUTLOOK.PST and not lose valuable contacts and data. Do not use the name OUTLOOK.BAK since there is already an automatic backup file named that. I always make my own backup file just in case.

Good Luck and post back to let us know how it works.

I have to thank again the Forum in general and you in particular for your insights and for being so thoughtful.
I am afraid didn't tell you, but a brother-in-law of mine, who lives in Paris, gave me as a present a Trinity TRIN100 - in French and with WM5. Thanks to a member of the Forum, Mr Reem Greiver, yesterday I went to a shop in downtown Tel Aviv, Omega-Phones, where they changed the language from French into English, and in the process they also upgraded Windows Mobile from version 5 to version 6. And the cost was only U$S 20. So, I got now a working telephone, and I kept the Contacts list (about 250 names).
BTW, I am feeling great and coming New Year we will all celebrate together at home and throw a party due to my total, full and complete recovery.
All the best,
Ari

With good health, a new phone and transferred contacts it sounds like a good time for you. I'm happy we could help. It also seems that the people at Omega-Phones are knowledgeable and helpful - good that you found them.

Don't forget to back up your contacts and data to your storage card, and if you are backing up to a PC, remember to do a backup of the Outlook.PST file to be sure your contacts are safe. Shalom.
