"I have done what you said as far as copying the "pim" to my storage card...when I click on it...it says there is no application associated with "pim". By me copying that to my card, does that automatically put my contacts onto my card??"
Please read my above post. Pim is a file that is used by your contacts manager program. It is not a an application.

It automatically backs up your contacts to your card. As stated above your contacts are still in your system memory unless you erase them.
Then your phone will not look for them on your card.

Cool. Thanks...so if I wanted to do a system restore I would just remove the card?? And then copy it from my card back to the phone?? Also I have been trying to get the HTCCube thing. I got a audio file and the cube cab from ppc geeks...restarted my phone and it says there is a error in opening that and many other files. The audio part works..but everytime I try to move my finger across the screena errorbubble comes up and says its not turned on. It's in my programs and you can adjust settings...it just won't work.

"To store the contacts on the storage card you have to go to file explorer (which is in Start, then Programs)
-in the upper right hand corner you'll see "Show". Click on "My Device"
-navigate down to "pim" file, then (on the lower right) click "menu", "edit" then "copy.
-go back up to "Show" and click on "Storage Card"
-then you can simply paste the "pim" into your storage card. So whenever you add more contacts you'll have to repeat all of this to keep the most recent file in storage.

If you end up losing all of your data, or having to reset your device back to it's factory settings you can simply copy the "pim" from your storage card and paste it back onto your device. You will have to rename the "pim" that's in "My Device" (to anything) so that it will accept the "pim" that you are moving in to the folder.
I found this on another forum.. hope this help....

After you've done all of this, you have to turn your phone off. When it comes back on your contacts are restored...good luck!
"
I upgraded to the newest version, saved my contacts to my storage card, but cannot rename the pim on the device as it says it maybe in use or write protected. Help

"" pim " is a file not an application, it doe not run. When your phone runs it's contacts manager app, pim is the file it accesses for information."
so if it is just a file, then how do you save the contacts on the mogul?

Again, you can back up your contacts file on to your memory card, but you cannot erase them from your main memory and store and access them from your Storage card.

try PPC PIM Backup http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
Freeware that saves the PIM data and selected extra files to SD card.

You can also use Sprite Backup which is already on the device. It will let you back up the entire phone configuration, Including contacts to the storage card. If you ever have a problem or lose data, you can do a hard reset (which clears everything from the phone and reloads the rom in the original configuration), then use Sprite Backup to restore all data, contacts, etc. The whole process takes less than 15 minutes, even with a lot of data and contacts on the device.

Go to Start>Programs>Tools>Sprite Backup and follow the prompts to backup everything. I do a Sprite backup at least once per week to avoid disasters. I also backup the PIM file from Outlook on my PC to a flashdrive every week. With Sprite Backup, you don't have to keep track of where you stored things on the storage card. Once you set up the backup in the program to backup to the storage card the backup program takes care of that for you. If you ever need it, Restoring data is as easy as backing it up.

Hi - Couple things:
1. It seems to me that there is no need to backup the PIM file to the storage card, because it is automatically backed-up every time the phone is connected to the PC through ActiveSync.
2. I couldn't find the PIM file under My Device - the only file is "History". I also couldn't find it in the Windows directory.
Please elaborate. Thanks, Ari

I know many users (myself included) that at one time or other cleared the memory on their device and then synced to the PC with the sync setting set at "Handheld overwrites PC" instead of "PC overwrites Handheld". This error wipes out most or all of the PIM information on the PC. If you don't have the info backed up somewhere, recovery is a real chore - especially if you have many contacts, calendar entries, notes, tasks, etc. I back up my entire device to the storage card every week, and backup the PIM file on my PC (it's called Outlook.pst) to a flashdrive. That way, no matter what happens, I have two backups.

If you are looking for the PIM file on your PC it is called "Outlook.pst". You should be able to find it by looking at
C:\Documents and Settings\"your name"\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\Microsoft\Outlook\outlook.pst.
Make sure you substitute whatever pathname you use for your files in place of "your name" above.

If you navigate the path and can't find "Local Settings" it means your computer is setup to hide system files. To unhide system files on your PC -
go to Start>Control Panel>Tools (in the top menu)>Folder Options>View Tab> look under “Advanced Settings”, then under “Files and Folders” go down about 8 lines and click on the button that says “Show Hidden Files and Folders” then click OK. Do a restart of your computer to allow the new settings to take effect then follow the path to Outlook.pst. Copy Outlook.pst to a flashdrive and you have a backup of the PIM that will survive a PC crash or a device crash.

Have you tried using PimBackup (from XDA-Developer's website) its an programatical way to backup and restore the PIM data and selected ofther files
from the devies main memory to the card. Check out the link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705
http://www.dotfred.net/ (author's website)

I use it nightly to backup everything. I've restored both the whole thing and specific
types or even items from those backups. program is easy to use.

Another related solution is to sign up on the free webpage www.dashwire.com , which backs up all the data on your smart phone wirelessly, maintains an up-to-date back up, and enables you to manipulate the data. It is another GREAT solution. Do you find this valuable?

You are right... this happened to me as well. Thank you for the "Outlook.pst" tip.

Maybe, you can copy the 'pim' file to your memory card and replace the original 'pim' file with the shortcut of the file which you have moved to the storage card. Shortcut won't consume more than 1KB memory. Do you find this valuable?

yes you are all right about the outlook.pst file. REMEMBER this is your actual OUTLOOK email client file. so you will always be able to backup your data if you sync everyday. Sync software free from Microsoft. But that outlook.pst has all your emails, calendar, contacts etc. So do not worry if you sync you have a backup. For HTC's pda capability. but this is great tip for those who cannot sync their PIM.
