internet sharing/wireless modem connection issues
Feb 14 2008, 10:41 AM EST | Post edited: Feb 14 2008, 10:41 AM EST
i am having a difficult time getting the tilt to connect when using both the internet sharing and the wireless modem options. i have the unlimited data package but so far i am only able to access the web on the tilt, neither USB or bluetooth PC connection seem to work.
is there a specific setting that i need to enable in order to get sharing up and running?

The HTC 8525 included an application in the OS that something similar to NATting. (Network Address Translation) Routers do this so multiple devices can connec t to one visibible internet IP address. Seems that AT&T has moved away from this and changed their data plans for a reason. They now have Data Tethering plans. They removed the APN isp.cingular from the plans and isp.cingular no longer provisions in the switch. They want you to pay more for the tethering feature which will allow you to set up a dial up networking connection in Windows. (i.e. *99#)
It would be trick to find an application will provide NAT service to a computer connected through USB.

Where exactly are you running into the problem? Is there an error message? Did you get tethering capabilites included with your data plan?

On a quick note: After doing some snooping into the files on the windows directory in the phone I found this app neatly hidden from sight...
Go to File Explorer. Browse to windows folder and look for the app named: "Internet Sharing."
I haven't been able to try this out yet but it may work.

i'm not sure where the internet sharing option came from. it was not on my first 8925 but on my 2nd tilt when i did the reset to remove the at&t bloat ware the internet sharing option appeared. maybe i didnt notice it before, maybe it was always there, i dont know. i added it to my programs from the start dropdown, it's a good thing that i did because i can't find it in programs or settings.
when i tap connect i see the following
"connecting to: AT&T ISP GPRS
connecting to GPRS, 3G..."
there is an option to tap settings but it only takes me to the GPRS settings where you can select either PAP or CHAP.
after 5-10 seconds i get another message that says
"the remote party has ended the connection."

i access the wireless modem from start->setings->connections tab->wireless modem
tap menu->start but the connection, send data and receive data boxes never change from black.
i dont ever get any real error messages when trying to use either one.

woo hoo! just figured it out, well half of it anyway. still no progress on the wireless modem option.
in internet sharing i had to change the nNetwork Connection: from AT&T ISP GPRS to MEdia Net. I also changed the GPRS from CHAP to PAP, but im not sure if that did anything or not as i changed that first and still had the same connection issues.

now if i could just get the sharing to connect via bluetooth and i'll be set.

cheers

How do you incorporate the internet sharing in the start dropdown? It seems to be a perfect solution!

I don't no about windows xp but on vista i just added my a bluetooth modem and it reconisis my phone as a modem, dials, and connects, i don't have to run anything on the phone it's self i just have to make sure the internet connection isn't already being used by an application, if you want more details ask. The easiest way it to just copy the file to the root folder 'My Device" on your phone. Do you find this valuable?

"did anyone ever get the tethering to work? I tried it on my HTC Fuze but i get a message saying "remote party has ended this connection""
That is because you have to have a tethering plan with the HTC Fuze, it isnt like the Tilt where you can sneak past having the right plan.
