Issues with HTC Touch on Alltel
Jan 27 2008, 10:08 AM EST
I have had the Touch for just over one week, an exchange (after 3 replacements) from the HTC PPC6800. It has locked up more than 4 times requiring a soft reset each time. It seems better at using bluetooth on a Motorola H700 and the HT820 stereo headsets than the PPC6800, but it still has issues. Here they are:
1) One lock up was a blank black screen, no idea why yet
2) Two lock ups were due to using an Adobe Acrobat reader 2.0 for Pocket PC, probably not the correct reader for this unit. I will investigate and replace it with a better one.
3) One was just after using bluetooth for hands free operation.

It has a TERRIBLE TIME with VOICE RECOGNITION, not even coming close to what name I commanded it. This is very frustrating.

I will continue to edit this as I have more issues. I went to all the trouble to change out from the PPC6800, and I am having similar issues as it, but it is still better, at least it functions most of the time now on bluetooth, unlike the PPC6800, which locked up continually after using it on bluetooth.

I have not had any lock-up issues with mine, working on 4 weeks with it.

However, I replaced the rediculous voice recognition software with Microsoft's Voice Command 1.6 for voice dialing and it works flawlessly.

I just checked into what you recommended, and I can't see paying $39.99 for something that should work in the first place. You must work for Handango. 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Updated issues RE: Issues with HTC Touch on Alltel
Feb 8 2008, 7:56 AM EST
New problems and updates to the old ones that I have found:
The ringer turns off for no explained reason. I am very careful when putting my phone back in the HTC designed hoster, yet I have found many times that when I pull the phone back out, the ringer is off.
No solution yet for the PDF reader without paying for one.

I wasn't willing to pay to fix a phone that didn't work right in the first place.
Even though the phone is really neat, the issues are starting to get to me, between not recognizing the voice command, shutting off the ringer, and not working correctly with PDF files.

Sounds like a bad bluetooth headset. Try a different one and compare. Do you find this valuable?

I have tried 3 different head sets (all are different models too), on 4 different phones. It is not a head set issue, since the headsets work on other phones. This phone constantly screws up when using bluetooth. I still like it and am awaiting a fix, which Alltel is very aware of, yet can't tell me when. Do you find this valuable?

I got my HTC Touch phone on 15 Mar 2008. Love the size, the touch screen is not all that great and not sensitive at all when you put the screen protector on, but I can live with that. However, I started noticing that yesterday my HTC Touch head phones are having connector problems. I am having to move the dongle around for it to make connection so I can hear out of both ear buds. So as a word of advise, keep an eye on the head phone connection piece, it is flaky. I am just curious to know what other problems I would need to be aware of.......

All my comments above still apply, plus and additional one, connecting with Microsoft Outlook is PAINFULLY slow when compared with all of the Pocket PCs I have had before. What should take seconds takes MINUTES for it to sync with Outlook.

I call Alltel weekly, to advanced tech support, to ask what is going on. the latest word is that after all of the other phones that HTC makes, this one is now in the queue and is in testing to see if the fixes worked.

I have replaced my new PPC6800 4 times in the past week because of lock-ups. Alltel sales people were clueless as to why the lockups were occuring! Finally came to the realization that it is directly related to bluetooth use - with my car. After getting out of the car, I have to soft reset the phone or it will lock up - with lights flashing like it works - but not accept calls, and not come back on. Headsets are one thing, but cars are a real problem. Its not like you can just try new cars till you find one that works with this phone! Plus, many states require hands free in a car - and this phone messes that up totally! I have seen several hacker boards that talk about ROM changes that clear this problem - but that seems too intense and voids the warranty according to the sites. One site said it works fine with some headsets/cars but not with others - including Lexus, Acura, and BMWs. So a high-end phone like this doesn't work with luxury cars - really bad. Realize that this post if for the newer Touch phone. The Touch works much better than the PPC6800, but loses features like Wifi. I really like the Touch though compared to the 6800. Also note that Alltel will give you a new different phone since you have already gone through more that 3. A last thought, don't use the bluetooth feature, use the head phones that come with the phone, and it works much better. If you do this maybe they will finally get a fix for the ROM that makes the phone work well as the other posts for the same phone on the other networks say.

Sorry - mine is a Touch. More importantly, I have discovered what causes the lock ups. In my case at least, if the Touch's screen is not lit - and I turn off bluetooth (by turning off the car) the Touch locks up and has to be rebooted! If I take the time to touch the power button on the HTC before turning off the car, it does not lock up, ever! 2  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

This won't help you at all, but I don't use the blue tooth at all but I still have the constant problem of the phone looking like it is on and the light blinking but cannot activate it or receive calls without a reset. Very annoying. Do you find this valuable?

Most of my issues, especially with voice dialing, were fixed when I upgraded to the latest update, requiring that I fully clear off my Touch and reinstall everything after it. BUT NOW I HAVE ISSUES WITH THE RINGER TURNING OFF, EVEN NOT VIBRATING, usually when I least expect it!!! JUST YESTERDAY IT DIALED SOMEONE ALL BY ITSELF WHILE I HAD MY BLUETOOTH HEADSET ON. DON'T TALK TO YOURSELF WHEN YOU ARE DRIVING, YOU MIGHT HAVE SOMEONE LISTENING!!! After 5 months, I have had it with the phone. I need blue tooth, and it works alot better, but I cannot tolerate any more this kind of stuff. And, with Alltel being bought by Verizon who messed me up so badly when I had them, time to go with someone else, probably ATT. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

The update of the ROM fixed the voice dialing and most all of the locking up issues. The NEW ISSUE is that the ringer turns off almost all the time when I turn off my blue tooth headset. I never know when my ringer is off unless I check it EACH TIME I turn off the headset.

I just purchased my phone last week and was on the verge of returning it. With many issues trying to link my work e-mail address. I was finally able to resolve this issue and am now able to receive and send messages. However now when I sync it up with my computer I am getting an error message. Although it still updates my calendar and contact list. I have a Lexus Gx470 and the bluetooth works most of the time. At times it does say device connection error. I am really trying to like the phone before the month is up and I can't return it. This is my 1st "smart" phone. How smart, I am not yet sure. Do you find this valuable?
