Why does Telus not auto-add "1" for long-distance?
Dec 5 2007, 4:16 PM EST
I've tried to change the "Services" setting, to enable this - but it never works. This drives me nuts, because for some reason, why I get incoming calls which were from long-distance non-Contacts - they go into the phone history list within the "1", and so trying to dial them from the list is an excercise in frustration. Do you find this valuable?

I too am with Telus and have the same issue. I believe this issue is not only with the phone, but with the service provider (Telus) as well. I used to be with Rogers and if you called a long distance number without the +1 ahead of the number, you would be prompted that this is a long distance call and would be re-routed without you having to redial. I hope someone from Telus is reading this? Do you find this valuable?

This is a combination of a phone software bug that fails to add the 1, and the failure of Telus to define dialling rules that accommodate 10-digit long distance dialling. It effectively disables anything but manual dialling for most users in most calling areas, crippling the phone.

I had extensive discussions with Telus tech support and network support when I first bought the phone, and was told to expect a software update from HTC 'shortly'. Ten months later, still no software update, and the only advice Telus provides now is to update every contact in one's address book to include the 1 (which will take hours and hours, and will also cripple use of the address book for other phones or Skype).

However, there is a workaround ... dial the number from the phone's address book (or from an SMS or whatever), let it fail, and then hit the Call button to redial last number. The HTC software will add the 1 to the number ON REDIAL.

However, even with this accidental workaround, I'm done with Telus. There's no way this serious problem didn't come up during testing of the phone on their network, and they released it anyway then decided to play dumb when customer complaints started to come in. I thought Rogers was bad, but this is taking it up a notch.
