You don't need to soft reset. It looks like powering the device off and on does the trick as well.

How would you power off when there's nothing being displayed on the screen ?

The power button did not respond either. Frustrating. At least it has only happened a couple times.

Power cycling the device is the same as a soft reset.

Just got my Tilt this week (June 4, 2008)...Rom 1.62.502 Dated: 1/17/08 Red phone/start button still isn't working. I had to start it with the side button. Glad to read it wasn't just my phone having this problem.
