GPS Settings

Many people are having issues with the GPS settings on the device, the following discussion should be able to help: http://www.x7501.com/forum/X7501-GPS-Issues-1184315093.html.

The GPS is connected to COM5, at 9600 baud (note that forums report using 38400 baud allows faster satellite connection). Unfortunately, only one application at a time can connect to the GPS COM port. HTC provides an application that allows multiple applications to use the GPS at the same time. This application will connect to the GPS hardware on COM5, then create a 'virtual' COM port that other applications can connect to. This application is found under under the 'Settings' menu, 'System' tab, called 'External GPS'.

If you use the 'External GPS' application, use the following settings.

Programs: GPS Program Port: Select the COM port of your choice (e.g., COM4)
Hardware: GPS hardware port: COM5
Hardware: Baud Rate: 38400 (forums report that this baud rate works, and your GPS will connect to satellite faster).
GPS Settings: Select (x) the "Manage GPS automatically" checkbox

You application will connect to GPS through the GPS hardware port that you have selected (e.g., COM5).

If you want to connect to the GPS directly, unselect the "Manage GPS automatically" check box.

Factory Default/Hard Reset
To reset the unit to factory default settings, do the following:

1. Slide the Volume slider down and at the same time, use the stylus to press the RESET button at the back of your device.
2. After a brief period of time, two choices will appear on-screen. Press the CENTER OK button to perform the hard reset.
Note If you do not want to perform a hard reset, press the CAMERA button to exit.
3. Press the POWER button.

Note: If you have an SD card with software that will autoinstall (such as Tom-Tom Navigator), remove the SD Card before performing the factory reset. The third-party auto-installation may interfere with the HTC automatic installation process, and applications such as TeleNav and Opera may not install.

From HTCWiki User visionarymarketing: a neat little machine, I purchased barely a week ago. a great companion for taking notes during meetings and also for browsing the Web at home without having to switch the old computer on. The screen is awesome (5") and it even has a VGA port for presentations (tried it and it works well). One may soon envisage to travel lighter and leave the laptop home.

Just a little glitch: the device comes with a PDA printing driver installed (so-called JetCET) which causes a crash anytime I launch the Opera browser (very good by the way and much better than IE for that respect). Anyone who can tell me how to turn off this dreadful piece of software is entitled to a lifetime of gratitude.

Here are some user suggestions to make this product more useful.

Remove the 8GB Microdrive and replace it with a CF+ slot.
- I can now buy at retail an 8GB x100 speed CF card for $80USD. Faster cards will be out soon, and likely the 8GB CF will drop in price. CF have no moving parts, so less chance of drive damage in a fall.
- Probably longer battery life as a drive is not kept spinning.
- More importantly, loading 8GB can take a LONG time to load/unload via an ActiveSync connection; it's much faster to plug the CF card into a media slot of a PC or laptop.
Add support for other cell phone systems, such as Verizon and VZW.
Is there a benefit to HTC to exclude one of the largest cell phone networks in the US? If their standard (CDMA) can't be incorporated to make Athena a truly universal phone, how about a version with just the CDMA voice and data support?
Backlight the keyboard.
Whether it's an LED in the Athena body that reflects into the keyboard or a power tap where the keyboard clips on, having lit keys makes the keyboard more useful in dark situations.
Thumbwheels please!
One on top, one on the side, for easy scrolling, maybe even one-handed. The joystick can't be used easily one-handed.

And in the nice to have, but not a big market (yet):

Can the GPS in the Advantage interface with Personal Locator Beacons (PLB)? If not, can it be done?
As people travel more in new places, the idea of bringing along a Personal Locator Beacon is growing. The recent safe recovery of several hikers on Mt. Hood in a blizzard because they had a Personal Locator Beacon makes them inexpensive life insurance. However, most rely on being found by searchers triangulating on the signal; they do not transmit a location. If able to talk to a GPS, they WILL send that location information. The GPS-PLB protocol is standard, and could be included. Note that PLB are supported around the world.

I just wanted to say that it's cool that we have an HTC wiki. A telephone rep from HTC told me about this site. I saw that there was no Sprint Touch Pro 2 page, so I took the liberty of adding it.

Sorry in advance for the double post, but each post has a 2000 character limit and I thought a good in-depth first post would draw good discussion. Here are my first impressions of the phone that I personally thought was cool or unique compared to other phones or carrier models.

THE POSITIVE
*It's fast. I love the extra processing speed and RAM.
*Touch Flo 3D interface is smooth and well-made. So far, I've had a good experience with it. There was a bug that made it unable to place calls on the software, but a hard reset fixed the problem. I think it was my fault anyways. One random favorite is the facebook integration with your contacts. However, there are some negatives associated with it (see below).
* The 3mm Headphone Jack is a great addition. It's too bad it wasn't made that way for the other carriers.
* The Keyboard is very well-made and very solid. The backlight is also a big plus.
* Wi-Fi... nuff said =)
* The HTC Task Manager. I'm glad at least HTC realizes the importance of having a task manager in the top right corner and handy at almost any time. They realize that (unfortunately) it's used enough to need it as a quick shortcut. Definitely a plus in my opinion.
* Opera Mobile 9.5 comes included and as the default browser - *gets on knees* THANK YOU!!!
* The nice screen, extra stylus, other small things, ect. - Good small impressions and very convenient.

THE NEGATIVES
*It comes with the RAM at 71% used up. Although it has 288MB of RAM, which is quite a bit for a smartphone, it comes with 3/4 of it already used for the OS and Touch Flo 3D, which brings me to my next point...
*Although I do enjoy Touch Flo 3D, it's responsible for a lot of the memory usage in the phone. It (thankfully) can be turned off for those people that don't end up liking it. Turning off the feature dropped the memory usage down from 71% to 42% when I tried it.
*The battery life is very short. It's very understandable given all of the phone's capabilities and I almost think it's unfair to put this against the phone, but I fully charge my phone in the morning and it's half drained by the time I go to bed. I do use it a lot for internet and texting, but I thought I'd at least mention it to possibly warn prospective buyers.
*It comes with a lot of Sprint Applications that cannot be removed from the Control Panel. I have only the standard data plan, not all the fancy Sprint features like Sprint music or Sprint Navigation. It would be nice to remove the programs you don't need or won't ever use.
*The USB cable that it comes with is too short. It's about 5 feet long, but the cable that came with my older phone was much longer. I am neutral about the AC outlet USB interface. I can see people liking it or not liking it. I still haven't decided that yet.

Feel free to share anything you thought was a plus, or think could be improved. Is there anything I missed or didn't mention that you want to share? What are your impressions? What do you like / not like about the phone?

I share the same feelings as you do BeanoFTW. Below are functions that I have accessed via the TouchFlo3D screens.

I have several other cons to add to the list. CON 1. Adding a state in the weather app. I live in Richmond, IN and there is no way in enter this info in the app. I was told by an HTC rep to down load a 3rd party app to accomdate my weather needs.
CON 2. I haven't figured out a way to only show a defaulted filtered contacts ie: personal when selecting the people button. After clicking on "people" then "all contacts", all my contacts show up. I have them catorgorized as person, business & suppliers and it sucks when I want to look up my buddies number and i have to scroll down past my suppliers to see his number. It would be nice to just click "people" and have only personal contacts show up.
CON 4. I'm a former crakberry user and it was nice to have the option to delete e-mails from device or e-mail account or both. Is there a set up like this in the e-mail options? If so I can't find it.
Last but not least I'm not sure if this is a CON but I have deleted, cleared, soft reset & hard reset my phone to clear the call history and I still have the icon on my touchflo screen.

YI Code names are actually not an indication of the model at all. Code names will only tell you the manufacturing cycle / revision or regional information.

SIM Unlocking Phone
In order to use the phone universally across different carriers it must be SIM unlocked. This is different from CID unlocking which is what allows you to flash the phone with different ROMS. SIM unlocking was greatfully provided by rishi, and can be found here:

CID Unlocking
This is necessary to flash an unsigned or no-vendor ROM to your phone, a.k.a cooked ROMS. Some cooked ROMS provide their own CID unlocking and I recommend you use those.

Communication from/to HTC Touch Device can be done using either of these

4 options which are also latest communication standards today. However
the interoperability between these communication options takes you to
different level of mobile communication.

1) GPRS/EDGE ( Wireless)
2) Bluetooth ( Wireless )
3) Wi-Fi ( Wireless )
4) USB ( Wired )

Let's tap each in brief so that we are able to make the best possible use of
HTC Touch and see how we start playing at work and believe me its all fun to see
this device doing so many things.

1) GPRS/ EDGE :
This is the technology for packet data transfer over GSM networks and provided by your service operator. This starts once your sim is in your device. You can connect to internet through this device.

2) BLUETOOTH:
Bluetooth works wonders when used with Microsoft Activesync to sync your daily appointments, tasks, emails, calender etc.

We can even surf the internet through bluetooth. We can communicate with other bluetooth devices as well.

Bluetooth and Active sync together form a complete suite to communicate wirelessly, I have however removed wired desktops and have formed PAN of 4 desktops and my HTC Touch is controlling the personal area network of that adhoc network, wonderful.

If you feel you can connect HTC Touch to some external display to get perfect desktop screen.

Here BT supports various profiles like A2DP, Audio gateway, FTP, Active Sync etc.

3) WI-FI:
One more wireless monster, which gives you the liberty of internet access
near access points/hotspots.

It's very easy to securely connect to wi-fi and start browsing as if you are
browsing on your desktop itself.

Internet explorer makes surfing life more easier.

Security features are good, supports WEP and WPA both.

4) USB :
You can also surf the internet by using usb cable connected to your
Desktop by connection sharing.

Sync your HTC Touch with wired connectivity. Manage your device with
this wired communication option.

However specific queries can be answered separately, but having used
almost all the network stuff this device packs, it feels great to posess HTC
touch device, the world is at your fingertips.

Different network adapters are preinstalled like:
1) Bluetooth PAN adapter for PAN networks
2) Wired Network adapter
3) Wireless network adapter
4) NDIS Driver.

These adapters can be configured manually or leave them as they
are and they will pick up the automatic configuration from you
network. They are intelligent.

It is easy to install; instructions are good.
(Just download the upgrade to your PC, connect the USB sync cable to your Mogul, unpack the downloaded installation program and use the installation wizard).

To check whether you are already using the most current version of Office Mobile, open the "Programs" window, then open "Office Mobile".
Start "Excel Mobile" and open the "Menu" box.
If there is no "About" option in the Menu Box, you do not have the current version (i.e., ver. 6.1).

Go to Settings | Connections | Configure Network adapters. Set the 'Remote-NDIS Host' settings to use a specific IP address of 169.254.2.1, subnet 255.255.0.0, default gateway 169.254.2.2

Bell Mobility 2.13.666.0 and Sprint 2.09.651.3 - Alarms do not work when charging. Set Calander alarm for 6AM and charge overnight. It will not Wake. It will work if not on charger.

Sprint 2.09.651.3 - Microsoft Voice Command Confirmation does not work. Disable all conformations in VC Settings.

Sprint 2.09.651.3 - Windows Mobile Device Center issues over USB. Very slow often hangs. Tried setting Advanced USB on and off in device. Easy to lose Profile, some issues may be Vista.

Sprint 2.09.651.3 - Lenovo T60 Vista Laptop won't sync over or do anything over bluetooth except pair. May be Lenovo BT stack but PPC-6700 worked fine.

Sprint 2.09.651.3 - Low memory with clean device to start and seems to leak memory with usage. Some of this is all normal to have memory go down with usuage as file caches etc. expand but causes the device to often run out of memory.

An issue has been widely reported regarding choppy outgoing sound when using the PPC6800 paired with a Bluetooth headset. How to fix your HTC Mogul 6800, rather than throw it in the toilet.

Here we go, in a repeat of all the great work from xda-developers and ppcgeeks, (if you don't already have accounts in those forums and have read the titan upgrade sticky section back to front, go do it. Now.) and in a format for the poor ignored Bell users, this is how I 'fixed' my 6800 that Bell assured me had no problems. (google lies, and I should just, "turn off my bluetooth when not using it" so my phone stops locking up).
Check out this thread for all the steps I took, and the tools/ROM's I used.

First off, do at your own risk, if something breaks I would bet its something you did, so take responsibility for your actions. Don't whine to me if it doesn't work. Ive done this to my phone many times, no problem. I've done it to other peoples 6800, again, no problem. If it breaks everything and generally ruins your life, well that's what you get for taking advice from strangers on the Internet. Go buy a razr and stop whining.

Before we get going, you need your MSL code. Don't know what that is? Then you really did not read the last post where I told you to go read the upgrade section at forum.ppcgeeks.com under the Titan-> Upgrades section. But of course, if you had read that you probably wouldn't be using this as a guide, so I'll stop pretending you will, but you will at least need an account at ppcgeeks (its free) to download some tools, and an important one is here:

Unzip it, and put a copy on your SD card, or the main file system on your 6800. Run the program and put in your ESN. Don't know what that is? (what, I should hold your hand while you do this?) Its the funny hex looking code on the back of your battery, but an easier way is to go to your phone dialer, and type ##778# and choose view. A whole list of stuff will come up, find the ESN(Hex) field and write that down. Put that number in the GetSPC.exe program that you put on your 6800, and voila, it will spit back a 6 digit number that is your unlock code. Now dial ##778#, choose edit, put in that code, and what do you know? You can program your phone now. BUT DON'T ACTUALLY CHANGE ANYTHING. This step is just a precaution. What I recommend is getting a piece of paper or excel sheet if you like to get fancy, and copy down all your settings when you are viewing your ##778# programming. In reality you don't need it all, but the big ones are ESN and MSID, but if you want to be safe, copy it all down, don't forget to check the view info menu, there is more then just the first page. Keep that information safe, if there are problems, this will let your put your settings back easily. This is only a precaution.

Now lets get to the cool actually hacking part. We have to replace your bootloader for the phone, to unlock it for other ROM's to be loaded. This process sounds scary, but once you have this new bootloader in you can always forcefeed you phone a new ROM, if you ever flash it with a bad one. Try this now, press your camera and power button at the same time, while hitting the reset buttton with your stylus. (if you don't know what that means, don't bother to hack your phone. Sell it on ebay and go buy a razr. And stop whining.) See the pretty rainbow screen? That is your phone ready to take a ROM, trouble is, this bootloader will only take certain ROM's Bell has blessed as worthy. Lets get rid of this one and put in a much more relaxed version. You should read this post (I know you won't, but you should) http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=9093 and download this program: ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Titan/Users/ImCoKeMaN/roms/Hard-SPL-MFG.exe and run it. It will unzip a bunch of files to a temp directory, make sure you can locate it. If your phone is still at the rainbow screen, reset it with the stylus, let it boot as normal and sync it. Once connected via activesync, go to the directory that was made from the exe and locate the Titanunlocker.bat file. Run it and follow the steps EXACTLY as it says. It will ask you to unplug and plug in your usb, stuff like that, just do what it says. When its done you will have a rainbow screen that says its version 2.40 now, and it will ask you about loading a ROM. Cancel that for now, we still have more work to do. By the way, now your 6800 can't do a thing but show you the rainbow screen :) Congratulations, you have officially trashed your phone. Have a cigarette, drink, whatever your poison is and celebrate your new found freedom.

As nice as the rainbow screen is, I'm sure you would like your phone to actually make phone calls, so lets continue. The next part is to get the latest radio onto your phone, and the easiest way to do that is to load the sprint ROM, and here is how. Download this file:

It's actually a zip file so use winzip or rar to unzip it to a temp folder and look for a file with the .nbh extension. That's the rom. You may see a couple in there, the one you want is called RUU_signed.nbh and its about 90 Meg in size. Take that file out and you can trash the rest of whats in there. Now we forcefeed the ROM to your phone. How you may ask? Of course your asking, you never bothered to read the ppcgeeks forums, so I'll tell you. You need a Rom Update Utility or RUU. Might as well get used the funny program names and acrynoms, your a phone hacker now. ftp://ppcgeeks:ezupload@up.ppcgeeks.com/Titan/Users/ImCoKeMaN/roms/RUU.rar This file is an empty RUU. Simply take the RUU_signed.nbh file and put it in the directory this rar file creates. Then you doubleclick the ROMUpdateUtility.exe and let this thing push the sprint ROM on your phone. Keep this program around, its great, basically any ROM you want to load you can put your phone in bootloader mode (remember the camera+power+reset trick?), rename the ROM to RUU_signed.nbh, drop it in this folder and run the update. Simple, right? Go have another cigarette, this ROM takes a while to load. But don't be gone too long, there is an important step coming up you really don't want to miss. I did and I hosed my phone so bad I had to go back to the Bell stock ROM. Running bell stock is so yucky it gives me shivers, so lets avoid that.

After the ROM is done loading, your phone will actually boot, sprint logo's and all (don't worry about that, we can fix that later). You will have to do your touch the screen to align, set time, etc, then when you see the message that it will run customizations in 3 seconds, REBOOT THE PHONE with your stylus. Do not miss this step, if those customizations run, your are screwed. (not really, but if you read a few posts in ppcgeeks, you will recover). On reboot it will not run anything and will be ready to go. Now lets check our programming. hit ##778# and view your settings. MSID, ESN, etc all look good? It should if you did not let the customizations run. Maybe make a phone call just to check. If anything is off, like your ESN, just ##778#, edit and use the MSL code. Then put the settings back. You really are in control of your phone now, feel like a bigshot? Well, at least, does it feel like you actually own your phone now? Very unlikely that any settings will be changed and you will have to put your ESN back, but better safe then sorry.

And now, the fun part. You are ready to build custom ROM's and hack your phone to your delight. You could stay with the sprint rom, but I think its crappy myself. Sure, your bluetooth will actually work, but the OS is still old and there is so much more you can do with it. The custom ROM's you hear about from DCD and No2Chem do not contain a radio, just the OS stuff, so you will not have to do the sprint flash again, we just did it to get the radio part. Once we overwrite with a custom ROM the OS will be updated, but you still have your cool new radio with working bluetooth, and the nifty lets hack it rainbow bootloader. How you get and load your custom ROM is flexible. For a first crack you may just want to download a already compiled and ready to load ROM, either DCD's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=385336 or No2Chem's http://rapidshare.com/files/101488056/nueROM_v2.0_build_5058.rar Just like the sprint ROM, take the nbh file, rename it RUU_signed.nbh, drop it in the RUU directory and click the update utility, the program takes care of the rest. Give yourself some downtime on a weekend to play with a few ROM's. When you are feeling good about the prebuilt ROM's, try installing the kitchen (a kitchen allows you to 'cook' your own ROM) from ppckitchen.org. This thing is way to cool to describe here. Download the app, run the updater, and literally build a custom rom with a really slick GUI interface. You have to see it to believe it.
