Tilt will not charge and/or Power On TroubleshootingThis is a featured page

If your device will not charge and/or power on:

  • Verify that the OEM Charger and Battery are being used.
    • Only the AC charger, Car charger, or USB data cable that came with or was created for the device should be used; others can damage the device and/or battery.
  • Check the USB Port on the device for any bent or misshapen PIN’s. If some are found, that is the most likely cause and this is considered physical damage not covered under the Warranty.
    • Example of damaged USB PIN’s:
Damaged USB PIN's

  • Remove the battery and inspect the contacts.
    • Remove any debris/residue found on the device or battery contacts with a soft, dry cloth.
    • Look closely at the battery contacts on the phone to see if they are bent out of shape.
    • If they are bent, attempt to gently bend them back into place, reinsert the battery and try to power the device on.
    • Ensure that the SIM Door is closed and locked (the device will not power on if the door is unlocked).
  • Try charging the device and be sure that have the customer try different power sources as well as chargers (i.e. the included AC Charger and data cable):
    • Plug in USB to device and PC; what color is the LED?
      • Note: If the device is not charging via the USB but is via the AC Adaptor, ensure that the checkbox for "When device is turned on, do not charge the battery when connected to the PC" found under Start>Settings>System Tab>Power.
    • Plug in AC Charger to device and outlet; what color is the LED?
      • LED indicators:
      • Orange=Charging
      • Green=Device is fully charged
      • Red=Battery completely drained. Charge using AC Charger.
      • None=Charger not detected, perform a reset with the charger attached, try another charger/battery.
      • Note: If the battery is completely drained, the LED will be Red for a few minutes and then turn Orange. Once the LED turns Orange that the device can then be powered on. If the LED remains RED, the device should be considered for an exchange.
  • If LED doesn't light up when charger is plugged in (both the device and power source), perform a Soft Reset (while still attached to charger and power source) by inserting the tip of the stylus into the Reset hole on the bottom of the device.
  • If LED doesn't light up, perform a Hard Reset.
    • Note: Since the device wont power on, the device cannot be locked up and all of the customer specific settings, applications, etc. will be permanently deleted during the Hard Reset.
  • Try another battery in the device.
    • Try replacing the battery while the charging cable is still plugged in. That sometimes works when an unplugged battery replacement will not.
    • If the device boots up/charges with another battery, that was the issue.
  • If the device powers up after Hard Reset, test the unit for a few days. If issue returns, device can be considered for an exchange.
  • If device shows charging with one (AC Charger or USB) and not the other, issue is with the accessory. Replace accessory.
  • If device will only power up when attached to charger (AC or USB) it is likely the battery needs to be replaced.

Yanqui Tilt won't charge or work on charger 8 Feb 15 2009, 1:12 PM EST by Yanqui

I moved over here from the Tilt buy or wait thread so as to focus on possibly finding a solution to the mysterious death of my Tilt. As stated in that thread, on Dec. 15 2008 my 2 month old Tilt lost its mind. I pressed the power button to turn on the phone and make a call and the screen was a flashing blue, red and green stripes. It then powered down on its own and I have not been able to use it since. When plugged into the charger it shows an amber led but will never turn green (charged) even if left on the charger for over a day. I have tried to have it replaced under warranty but because when I was making the warranty call to AT&T I got a fleck of spittle on the liquid damage indicator they will not honor the warranty. AT&T will not let me try a new battery without buying one but a couple month old battery shouldn't be bad anyway. when the phone is plugged into the charger it will not turn on at all. if it is not plugged into the charger it wil boot up fine but immediately show a low battery indication and shut down right away. I have talke to the HTC technical support and they have told me it appears to be defective hardware but because of the liquid damage indicator having a pink corner (from a drop of spit remember) the phone has no warranty and I will have to pay full price.
