Some people choose phones because they look cool; others choose them for specific functions like email. Is someone's device an expression of personality? Or is it a means to an end--just another tool to get the job done? Some questions to consider as you choose your new smartphone:

  • Does it look good?
  • Do I want a phone that acts like a computer? Or a computer that acts like a phone? The answer will influence what type of form factor you choose--a candy-bar shaped device like the T-Mobile SDA or a device with a full keyboard like the Sprint 6700.
  • How important is a robust push email application to you?
  • Are you using the device as an extension of your office and thus need Word, Excel, and Powerpoint?
  • Do you have particular RAM, ROM, and processor requirements?
  • What about fun? Are music, video, photos, and games important to you?
  • What wireless network and speed? Do you need a EVDO, EDGE, UMTS, or HSDPA phone?
  • What about wi-fi or Bluetooth?
  • Screen size?
  • Required battery life and easy charging extra batteries?
