ActiveSync Synchronization
Microsoft ActiveSync acts as the gateway between your Windows powered PC and Windows Mobile powered device, enabling the transfer of Outlook information, Office documents, pictures, music, videos and applications from your desktop to your device. In addition to synchronizing with a desktop PC, ActiveSync can synchronize directly with Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 so that you can keep your e-mail, Calendar, Notes, and Contacts updated wirelessly when you’re away from your PC.

When to use ActiveSync
- Synchronizing Outlook email, calendar, contacts, and notes with your PC
- Transferring documents, music, videos, and applications to and from your PC
- Downloading corporate email directly from the MSFT Exchange Server
How to connect with your PC through ActiveSync
- USB Cable
- Bluetooth Connection
*ActiveSync to your PC will not work through WiFi. You can still access Exchange Server email through WiFi.
ActiveSync setup
Installation
1. Install latest version of ActiveSync (version 4.2 or higher) by inserting the supplied “Getting Started” CD
2. Upon completion of installation, ActiveSync will open with the “Get Connected” page
3. Ensure that the device is on and connect to your PC with the supplied USB cable
4. Click “Next” after the device has been connected to your PC
5. Once the device is connected to the computer, the Found New Hardware Wizard should recognize the device as a “Generic RNDIS” and then a “Windows Mobile Based Device”
6. Once the computer has recognized the device, ActiveSync will open and attempt to detect the device
Creating a Partnership (Outlook)
7. Once ActiveSync detects your device, the Synchronization Setup Wizard will automatically run; click “Next”
8. Select the Outlook information you wish to synchronize (your selections can also be changed in the future); click “Next”
9. Press “Finish” to save your settings and close the wizard
10. ActiveSync will start the synchronization process with your device and display progress
11. When synchronization completes, ActiveSync will show the “Connected” and “Synchronized” status
12. All of the Outlook information you selected will be synchronized between your device and PC
Common issues and useful tips
Common Issues
- USB Connectivity – Some users have had difficulty synching through USB
Things to check
- Activate USB connection – Ensure that “USB” is selected in Start > ActiveSync > Menu > “Connections…”
- Switch USB port – Switch to a different USB port and retry
- Do not use USB hubs / docking stations – Try using a USB port directly on the PC
- Deactivate Firewalls – Turn off any software firewalls that may be running
- “USB to PC” icon – You can resolve USB connectivity issues through this new utility. To activate, navigate to Start > Settings > Connections > More > “USB to PC”. Uncheck “Enable advanced network functionality.”
- Bluetooth Connectivity– Some users have had difficulty synching with Bluetooth
Things to check
- Partnership – Make sure there is an established partnership between your device and the PC
- Device settings – Make sure Bluetooth is turned on in Start > “Comm Manager”
- Obstructions – Remove any physical obstructions between the PC and device. Make sure your device is pointed to your PC.
Useful Tips
- Disable firewall software
- Disable VPN software
- Reinstall latest version of ActiveSync
- Unplug your device from the PC and reboot after ActiveSync installation
- Soft reset your device
